No sound input for headset mic even when plugged in

I’m using a laptop currently and the problem is that there is no sound input at all. My earphones are fine. I can hear sounds from videos and calls just fine but my microphone isn’t working. It works on any other device except my laptop. I can’t figure out what’s wrong.

I tried a couple things. I tried changing kernels to no avail, and I’ve also tried to add a kernel option to the system by adding ‘options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1’ to ‘etc/modprobe.d/alsa-hda.conf’. I am only using my earphones for sound input and so my laptop’s the built-in internal mic is basically useless.

I also noticed that on pavucontrol, under Input Devices, the Headset Mic is unplugged even though I’ve plugged my earphones in. Is this normal?

I don’t know what to do. I’ve been trying to fix this since yesterday. Also, I am still a rookie linux user so if somebody could help me that would be great. Thanks in advance!

I’m following this issue because i have it too since the beginning, both PulseAudio and PipeWire

Have you had this microphone working on this computer in the past?
your laptop has a combo audio jack (microphone on same plug as headphones), have you made sure that the plug is pressed full home?

sometimes with these plugs, you need to back them out 1 notch to get them to work correctly.
what does dmesg say just after you plug your headset in

Sorry for the late reply. I solved it. So I was switching kernels when I was trying to fix it and after the third try, I gave up thinking it’s not a kernel problem. Obviously I was wrong. I decided to give it one more shot and turns out I had to revert to a much older kernel (5.4 LTS). And now everything works! The only downside was that my wifi driver is rtw_8821ce and it does not work on the fly. Thankfully I found a solution online which involved installing a dkms and now my system is working.

I guess the issue was due to the patches they made in the kernel. If it wasn’t for my lack of patience I could’ve solved this on the first day lol. Thanks for the reply anyway!
