No Login-Screen with 2 Monitors

Hi Folks!

Since the second-last update, my computer does not want to start correctly, when two monitors are connected at boot. That is, i can only access the Terminal-Login when hitting Ctrl+Alt+F2.
Now here comes the fun:
IF i unplug one monitor and reboot. I can see the login-screen, login and connect the second monitor again, and everything works perfectly fine. I only did that unplugging-procedure with the monitor connected via HDMI, so i didnt check if it depends on DVI vs HDMI (see inxi output below).
(I am running a Ryzen processor without a graphics unit… and the only graphics unit is a GTX 960)

Have you guys experienced anything like that before?

Cheers and many thanks for any info or discussion in advance!

When you do not get a login screen please test the following:

Do as if you would see it, and type in the password for the user you used last, and press enter.

This helps in my installation, where my 2nd seat seems to get no login screen, but in reality has an invisible(dark) login screen. When i type the password for the last used user on this “black” screen and press enter, suddenly the login is possible, and then the screen works.

To rule something out, “Friendo”, since you mentioned a recent update, try this:

  1. Log out of KDE

  2. Switch to TTY2 with CTRL + ALT + F2

  3. Login with your username/password to this terminal

  4. Stop the SDDM service

sudo systemctl stop sddm
  1. Rebuild KDE cache
kbuildsycoca5 --noincremental
  1. Wait about ten seconds

  2. Reset the KDE Display & Monitor settings

rm -rfv ~/.local/share/kscreen
  1. Restart the SDDM service
sudo systemctl restart sddm && exit
  1. Switch back to TTY1 with CTRL + ALT + F1 and login to your KDE session

  2. Re-do your Display & Monitor settings back to your desired preferences

Hi @andreas85 and @winnie
Thanks a lot for your input!
I tried both of your suggestions, but unfortunately none worked

maybe i need to build a mechanical switch to unplug one monitor-cable when booting :hammer_and_wrench:

Ok but seriously…Do you guys have any other suggestions?

Cheers!

This is yours

Hey Sorry for the late reply…
I tried to use your script as a template, but unfortunately it did not work…

The only solution to my problem at the moment is

  • unplugging the monitor plugged in via HDMI
  • boot the computer until login-screen (with only one monitor it works)
  • after seeing the login-screen, plug-in the monitor
  • be happy

this is my nvidia.config file as of now…
As you can see, i am using

    Option "metamodes" "HDMI-0: nvidia-auto-select +1680+0"#,DP-3: nvidia-auto-select +0+390"

and

    Option "metamodes" "DVI-I-1: nvidia-auto-select +0+0"# {AllowGSYNC=Off}"

HDMI-0 and DVI-I-1, although my inxi -Gxx gives

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA GM206 [GeForce GTX 960] vendor: Gigabyte driver: nvidia
    v: 510.54 pcie: speed: 8 GT/s lanes: 16 ports: active: none
    off: DVI-D-1,HDMI-A-1 empty: DP-1,DVI-I-1 bus-ID: 26:00.0
    chip-ID: 10de:1401

but nvidia-settings gives me the information of HDMI-0 and DVI-D-0

But you managed to make it more convoluted than is needed …
You establish the primary monitor but also keep in mind the order they get activated by BIOS till Xorg kicks in. That order is VGA > DVI-I > DVI-D > HDMI > Displayport.

From your previous post i deduce that

has the LG Electronics connected to it and that is the Secondary monitor.

Your BenQ EW2780Q is connected to

and is the Primary monitor, right?

In that case, this should be better:

Hi Bogdan,
thanks again for your reply!

I copied your suggestion to /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf but unfortunately it still does not work.
When i reboot, both displays only show my BIOS-logo and no login screen
I dont know what i am doing wrong tbh.

I think this phenomenon with the BIOS-Logo on both screens appears, when using this line with two screens:

    Option "metamodes" "HDMI-0: 2560x1440_60+1680+0",DVI-I-1: 1680x1050_60+0+0"

Cheers,

Well, for me the

that i got from you here

is not quite what i think is correct, but even tho we share the same GPU model, i don’t know what else is off.
Try using

"nvidiaXineramaInfoOrder" "DFP-0"

Also, as pointed out earlier, i use

and i also use

And to be sure that once you modify /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf to run from terminal:

sudo mhwd-gpu --setmod nvidia --setxorg /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf

So, i used the script from your first reply again and used this now:

This actually changed the BENQ to the ‘main’ monitor. → And i dont need to unplug one screen anymore to get to login-screen. Now i can leave both monitors plugged in. However, i still have only one monitor (the BENQ now) working. The LG is Off. nvidia-settings gives me the status disabled for the LG monitor.

The option

    {ForceCompositionPipeline=On}

shifted my background somehow, but when commented it out, the BENQ works as it should.
But still, no LG-monitor working.
This drive me crazy guys

And if you change this to this:

    Option "metamodes" "DVI-I-1: 1680x1050_60+0+0, HDMI-0: 2560x1440_60+1680+0"

What is happening?

Tried it. No Change:
→ BENQ is coming to the login-screen.
→ LG stays off and nvidia-settings says (Disabled)

Bogdan, you are using two of the same monitors, right?
In the last script above, i tell it to just identify one, namely the BENQ… does that may have any effect?

No, are two different monitors … In KDE Plasma Display settings, can you turn it on? Here is mine:

And To be honest, i avoid Nvidia Settings UI, one because adds funky stuff to the conf, and i use my own config for very long time and it never failed me.

But here is how is set in Nvidia Settings:

The primary is the LG

The secondary is the Cintiq

Ah okay! Thanks!
I just use the nvidia-settings thing to check whats going on, i dont use the save to x.org-thing.

I noticed one more thing, my LG monitor seems to be plugged in in DVI-D-0, according to nvidia-settings:

Now here comes the fun again

when i change

Option "metamodes" "DVI-I-1: 1680x1050_60+0+0, HDMI-0: 2560x1440_60+1680+0"

to

Option "metamodes" "DVI-D-0: 1680x1050_60+0+0, HDMI-0: 2560x1440_60+1680+0"

and use sudo mhwd-gpu --setmod nvidia --setxorg /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf and reboot

The LG turns on! – but guess what – The BENQ turns OFF

Revert the order to:

Option "metamodes" "HDMI-0: 2560x1440_60+1680+0, DVI-D-0: 1680x1050_60+0+0"

Not suer that works, but the KDE Plasma settings must match the nvidia.conf

Same effect…
But i agree, it must be something in there…

Can you please start the pc by pressing e while in grub menu, and replace the quiet with nomodeset then press F10 to save and continue booting?

Maybe you have to enable early kms.
See here

Hi Bogdan,
I tried that but it did not solve the problem…

But I found a solution !!1!!11! :raised_hands:

I looked at the Xorg.0.log file again and noticed that it still loads the xorg.conf in

[     5.199] (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

and copied the
/etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf
from above to
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
et Voilà, now i have two working monitors again and can see the login-screen from the beginning!

  • However, i ask myself, why setting the configuration fileto /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf with sudo mhwd-gpu --setmod nvidia --setxorg /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf
    did not do the job?

For the sake of completeness, here is my working configuration file (xorg.conf) again (props out to @bogdancovaciu!) :

Thanks again to all!

that should have been solved by this command

but maybe xorg decided to ignore it.
Anyway, glad you sort it out.
