No audio with WirePlumber 0.5.17 — downgrading to 0.5.14 fixed it for me

I lost audio from PipeWire applications after the last update. YouTube, VLC had no sound, youtube load took forever and anything that needed a system sound completely froze (like during unsaved warnings and stuff). Did speaker-test - which worked normally. Then checked pw-play which produced no sound and hanged indefinitely.

System:

  • PipeWire: 1.6.8
  • WirePlumber: 0.5.17
  • Sound card: HDA Intel PCH / Realtek ALC3204
  • KDE Plasma + Wayland

Downgrading WirePlumber to 0.5.14 (with matching libwireplumber) from cached packages fixed the issue, at least on my machine.

I’m definitely no expert, and I did this short term solution to be ready for a job interview tomorrow - so I’m definitely not suggesting anyone do this without more research.

Happy to provide diagnostic output/logs if useful to anyone.

Beyond the mandatory reading advised by @Aragorn, post the output of the journal :

journalctl --user -u wireplumber -u pipewire -p err..warning --no-pager
