No audio after resuming from sleep (laptop)

Hello, I’ve had Manjaro KDE on my Toshiba Portege Z20T-B for a couple of months and everything is mostly fine but one thing I’ve discovered is that I get no audio after resuming from sleep. Graphics are fine and everything else is fine as far as I can tell but just no sound. It doesn’t look like any settings in System Settings > Audio are different after sleeping. Doesn’t seem to matter which application either (websites, music files, the System Settings audio test thing where you click Front Left/Front Right) - no sound from anything.

I’ve had a few rounds of updates since I installed and it’s persisted the whole time. Tried kernel 5.10 (install came with 5.9 iirc). I’ve had a look around the forums but I couldn’t find anything quite the same as my situation (apologies if I’ve missed something!). I’ve got full encryption on too from when I installed; not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Edit 2: Oh I forgot to say rebooting fixes it and everything’s back to normal until you sleep again.

When it happens, please do the following:

journalctl --system --boot=0 | grep "suspend entry"
journalctl --system --boot=0 | grep "suspend exit"

If that gives no output, try:

journalctl --system --boot=0 | grep "Suspending system"
journalctl --system --boot=0 | grep "System resumed"

then have a look at the begin and end time and post the output of:

journalctl --system --boot=0 --since "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS" --until "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS"

where obviously --since is the datetime of the suspension start and --until is the datetime of suspension end.

  1. Your TPM seems to be having trouble waking up and causing a ruckus: can you disable that in your BIOS / UEFI firmware?
    (On a private machine its usefulness is limited)

  2. If that doesn’t solve the problem, can you try if the following commands make audio work again:

    pulseaudio --kill & sleep 3 & pulseaudio --start

Disabled TPM and tested, then also tested the pulseaudio command but neither seem to have fixed the issue unfortunately sorry.

I’ve run out of ideas then…

@nikgnomic I know you’re more of an audio instead of a kernel guy but do you have an idea?

@wxm please post the link of the output of alsa-info.sh so our resident audio expert can have a look. (he looks at different things)

Ideally, please post the diff before and after the problem of the alsa info…

The other missing stream is for an input amplifier - Node 0x13

This might be a problem between the 2 active sound servers

PipeWire:
      Installed - Yes (/usr/bin/pipewire)
      Running - Yes

Pulseaudio:
      Installed - Yes (/usr/bin/pulseaudio)
      Running - Yes

Pipewire may have taken control of the audio devices in ALSA away from PulseAudio

But as far as I know, Pipewire is not capable of replacing PulseAudio completely unless you install the optional dependencies and remove PulseAudio

Or you can disable the Pipewire service and use PulseAudio

EDIT - I have just seen on another post that there may be another pipewire related service

OK, just tried that but still the same sorry. Think I did it right, they all say inactive (dead) and PulseAudio says it’s running.

Don’t know why I didn’t think of it before, but I had a random thought to try headphones just now and headphones do work. Seems to be just the speakers. Does that help the troubleshooting at all?

Any other thoughts?
