Newbie with Latitude E7470

Hi all! I’m new to linux with dual-boot experience with different Ubuntu-based distros and Windows previously. I’ve now received a new laptop Dell’s Latitude E7470 and I am eager to quit the dual-boot and choose a main linux distro.
I tried out Manjaro and really liked the first experience in live-session, but I wanted to make sure my hardware is compatible with the distro and whether I’ll be fine with few experience of linux overall.

What are the things I could test out in live-session to make sure my laptop’s hardware is compatible and working? What are the main differences, which I’d need to learn since I have a Ubuntu-based background? The only “for beginners” thing I found was this: https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=Using_Manjaro_for_Beginners is this enough or maybe there’s something else to learn…

I appreciate all the help and tips for making my transition from Windows-Ubuntu to Manjaro. Thanks in advance!

Actually , all you have to take note is if the kernel you can check the kernel which manjaro runs which is 4.4 and the drivers you are running, e.g graphic controller, sound system, network controller although manjaro will configure it mostly to you, like your touchpad. All i can say is to test it first in live install should you found issues there don’t panic as the live install doesn’t upgrade its packages for the system its just for installing manjaro. like the touchpad being too sensitive don’t worry its fine.

My advice for you is to test are sound , wireless network, touchpad e.g scrolling, pointer and the graphics will probably not be well configured but may run as the default manjaro renderer.

Test it for yourself. should any error occurs manjaro forum is always here and there are a lot of very helpful people here and likes troubleshooting. if you have any important files from your previous distros and windows version, i suggest you make a backup of them for safety measures.

You could also run a

inxi -Fx

to get an output of your hardware. Check that against search+linux

… but hold up a minute - according to the spec-sheet I just found, this machine is not only pure intel (=easy), but can also come with Linux pre-installed.

You should have 0 problems.

[edit] … oop one more thing. It’s skylake, yes?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_graphics#Skylake_support
So, look at that, but you should probably just be sure to run on 4.7+ kernel

Well yes … sorry, -Fx will show your network mac address by default, so @badbodh’s command is more proper for sharing. (though you could just delete it yourself before posting)

… I think thats what you are referring to ?

Thanks! I’ll take that into account next time, it’s just that I didn’t have the laptop by the time of posting. But yes I also thought that this Dell could make a good fit for any linux system. On my last computer the only thing I had problems with (hardware) was Nvidia drivers.
I’ll let u know, hopefully next time later today on new latitude with manjaro kde.
