New system hangs during pacman updates

Hope I picked the right forum category to post in. I’m actually having couple of weird problems with this system but will start with that the system is hanging when running updates (pacman -Syu). Some background, this is a newly installed Manjaro system using ISO downloaded a week ago (just the default xfce version).

First time running pacman -Syu and it will start going through the download process of several hundred package updates. It randomly freezes with the most recent packages at the bottom hanging at random percents. I open a new tab terminal and can ping my router and 8.8.8.8.

Other weird issues so far with using this system 76 meekat someone gave me. I’ve tried the updates several times and keep reproducing this issue with it handing. I’ll do a shutdown -r now come back into the system unlock the pacman db and try again. I even tried reinstalling from the USB ISO and totally start over. Twice the clock has been way off (certificate is not yet valid message) so I fixed by running ‘timedatectl set-ntp true’

I’m not sure what commands or outputs would be helpful to get started on this. I wonder if its a hardware issue. Also when the system hangs im usually no logner able to ssh into it. This is being setup as a small home server but for the pacman updates issue I have a local monitor and keyboard connected.

One other weird issue if that’s not enough a few times the system seemed like it went to sleep, display/monitor turned off. I went back later and disabled that settings but it still happened if I leave it running for hours. When I tap the keyboard to wake the system up its like it rebooted itself. I tried to check logs for kernel or crash using some commands I found online but didn’t find anything.

Apologies for throwing many weird random issues together. I’m just not sure where to start as this is a fresh install I’m trying on some used hardware. Maybe I need to replace the small internal cmos battery? But would that be causing all these weird problems?

Tried searching, always. No luck. Guess I’m just overwhelmed with it being a fresh install and having so many issues.

Something else I forgot to mention that contributes to me thought of hardware issues. The on-board NIC doesn’t work at all. I’m using a USB-to-Eth dongle.

Assuming the image itself was good, as well as the write…

( check the shasum, use dd for write or a tool like ventoy )

Then sort mirrors and sync ( and avoid pamac [gui] );

sudo pacman-mirrors --continent && sudo pacman -Syu

Thanks that appears to have fix the update issue. Can you help me understand what difference the pacman-mirrors --continent part made?

I guess with the other issues you all prefer I start a new topic? I rebooted the server and will just leave it alone for hours to see if it hangs further or randomly reboots as I described.

Despite you quoting andreas I suppose you are responding to me?

It sorted your mirrors, attempting to specifically use those local to your geographical region, as determined by your network. European mirrors if in europe, etc. Verified their status and ranked by speed.

Normally I would probably suggest pacman-mirrors -f (alone, no numeral) … which will do the same thing with your mirror pool. If no custom pool has been created already it would rank all mirrors globally.

(this also means going forward you can probably use pacman-mirrors -f and it will only be using regional mirrors. You can revert this later using -c all or various other flags. see the man page.)

Then we use pacman to Sync, refreshy, upgrade.
