New build slow, not stable processing graphics

New computer build a few months ago, can’t get it above sub-par performance, particularly when working with graphics. I suspect my old graphics card and maybe swap (because of “Alert” in system readout. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Well thats a thing.

You are using nouveau … which, as a reverse-engineering for a proprietary device … will never perform as well as the proprietary driver.
It is marked legacy/EOL … but it also appears you may have compatibility with the 390 series - which is available in mhwd.
So you likely want to use that.

ex:

sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia-390

You also have BIOS upgrades available.

(surprised you didnt do this when you built/bought the few months ago)

Definitely create swap of some sort.
There are numerous options … but a swapfile may be the easiest.
(I believe its default now … but maybe also check/enable zswap)
Heres a quick guide: Manjaro hanging at random - #6 by cscs

And to the rest of things … you are in a bit of a pickle because based on the older GPU I might suggest a lower kernel … like 510 or 515 LTS… but with the rest of the machine generally newer then you probably also want the newer kernel for all of that. :person_shrugging:

These are just a few first steps. Further configuration is always possible.
A quick little tool you may want to look at is this: cscs / maxperfwiz · GitLab

might be a little bit OT but is dual-channel-memory control avaiable ? please check your mainboard-manual if the physical placement of your dimm-ram is optimal. i think your board should support dual-channel and you can optimize it by replacing your ram to the proper sockets.

your gpu is a classic passive-cooled server-card for basic functionality. you shouldn’t expect too much performance (or any performance) from it but to the other hand the max. power consumption is less than 30 Watts. if you need more graphics-performance a switch to some more modern is a good choice.

Thanks – I’ve updated the BIOS, made a swap file, and performance has improved somewhat. Ordered new gpu; time to retire the old GF119.

The memory boards are as recommended in the ASUS mb user guide. Why this way (ram in 2 and 4) instead of 1 and 3 they don’t say. Maybe I’ll switch them to 1-2 to see what happens. I’m wondering how much more performance it would yield to double the memory with two more cards that fill all four slots. The mb’s user guide says nothing about dual-channel memory, nor could I find anything on the ASUS website for this mb. Thank you for your time and input.

keep in mind that you mark a thread as solved if the question is solved. usually you should mark the post of the user that gave the solution. i mark yours as solved, feel free to change it if you think it isn’t.
