With the -dkms version, you should theoretically be safe if you upgrade the same kernel version. I’m not sure about changing between major versions, like 5.10 to 5.15. And even less about, for example, 4.x to 5.x. But from my understanding it will keep when upgrading from, for example, 5.10.x to 5.10.y.
