Network ethernet problem

Hello. Lately I have been having problems with my Ethernet connection not working while it states it’s connected (both from Network Manager and physically) and there are no connection problems (the limited connectivity problem for example).

I did a little searching and I found out that both systemd-networkd.service+socket and NetworkManager are running and while I disabled the systemd-networkd.service+socket as a test, it keeps restarting on every reboot.

When I boot my pc, I don’t have Internet and if I stop the aforementioned services, it comes back online. I feel like I am not solving this properly, but even if I am and the services shouldn’t have started, can you please tell me how to really disable them? Or provide me with the proper solution.

I don’t have a strange network configuration, only a connection with only IPv4 for the VPN, and a normal one. All configured from the NetworkManager GUI. The VPN is not automatic. I switch it on later and is not part of the problem. I just mentioned my whole network config and my needs.

If you have run the command below - it will not start nor enable by itself.

sudo systemctl disable --now systemd-networkd.service systemd-networkd.socket

If it does enable - then you have other issues - perhaps the vpn requring the systemd-networkd service - suffice to say - nothing enables by itself - it must be triggered by something.

You will have to backtrace - e.g. check if your resolv.conf get’s restored correct after disconnection your VPN - yes I saw you didn’t reckon the VPN was part of the problem - do check the resolver status and check if the lack of internet is due to missing DNS or the NIC being down…

As you mentioned, it should not start after running these commands. Is there any way to check what triggered a service? I did a bit of searching and I found out that I also have valet-dns.service running and it’s probably that because it has

After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target systemd-networkd-wait-online.service

and from the wait-online, the chain continues. I have some questions so I can research further on my own.

Should I be running both NetworkManager and systemd-networkd or is that a problem caused by the valet-dns.service?

Also sometimes after shutdown, I get a hanging Failed to start Wait for Network to be configured. Could that point to something I should check?

Same question for the dnsmasq.service (although I don’t know if something can conflict with this as well). I am posting the status as well with a valet related dns problem that after a while solves itself(?)
