Vpn install works on notebook , but times out on desktop

Both machines are running xfce manjaro…After setting up the vpn on the notebook and then rebooting, the vpn is available. Not so on the desktop. Both are connected to the same router: desktop is wired, noteboot is wifi. Suggestions?

provide more detail and context

What vpn?
How installed?

perhaps the vpn config needs you to provide the interface - which is wifi in one case, ethernet in the other

… not enough information …

Protocol is Openvpn, using the providers setup. I’ve been using this vpn service for several years, just now setting it up on the Manjaro installs. Very simple setup.

very simple - but no details and it doesn’t work … :man_shrugging:

one would need a good quality crystal ball in order to provide half way effective help …

It does work on the notebook, and it has worked well on my other systems…Go to https://trust.zone/setup
and you can see how simple it is. I’m in the U.S., re the server section.

I can’t see anything when I go to that address.
I’m asked to disable my ad blocker (ublock origin)
I even did that.
I still can’t see anything - they apparently want a login.

… not going down that route - sorry

provide info if you want assistance

but not from me - I’m out of here

Good luck!

ps:
… perhaps they only allow one machine at a time - or some such thing
some providers do that, depending on the plan you pay for …

I’ll not investigate or pursue this any further - as I said.

Cheers!

pps:
I know a good vpn with good, working instructions on how to use it / set it up:

Mullvad - ArchWiki

5 bucks a month - use it when you need it - no plans to reduce cost when buying one or two or ten years at a time …
just one price

I was able to see the instructions and yes seems easy enough. However, there is no mention of a firewall. Is it possible you blocked port 443??

ufw allow 443

restart.

You mean the browser-based VPN works, but the desktop-based VPN doesn’t work?

I highly recommend Mullvad

As many have mentioned already, you don’t provide enough info for anyone to be of real help.
No one is telepathic to know how your machine is actually configured, and no one can look through your eyes…
So to start see:

Don’t forget to provide output of relevant commands to show your network config etc…
Both machines may run the same OS, but might be configured completely different due to hardware differences…
(You even mentioned yourself that one uses WiFi and the other uses Wired connection)

Why would a client need to open incoming connections on port 443?

From experience, any company that needs to put the word “trust” in their name or product is especially not trustworthy.

Your linked page trust.zone is on the EasyList adblocking page.

I only use one machine at a time …

aste code here

I’ll remember that…

ublock origin here too. All the configuration is visible except for the name/password fields.

Perhaps you use a different set of filters - trust.zone is blocked for me because it is in EasyList.
Even when I disable it completely I do not get to see the configuration files - not without login.

Strange instructions they have - for some Linux flavors they describe how to use the wireguard protocol
while for Manjaro especially they only describe the setup and use of openvpn.

That makes no sense - either it works for all distributions - or it doesn’t.

I know it works on Arch and Manjaro - the setup is described in the Mullvad link I gave.
You just would need to use their configuration file instead - get it from their description for wireguard on Ubuntu.

Problem solved. The desktop’s ovpn file was out of date; it was ancient history, actually :face_with_raised_eyebrow: I uploaded the ksystemlog’s syslog’s related to openvpn to the vpn service, who pointed this out to me.

It connects instantly now

Thanks for the exchanges!
