Network connection breaks, then reconnects itself again

This happens to me sometimes on this laptop, and I can’t find the cause for the life of me. I am new to Linux and Manjaro and my knowledge is quite limited, so please bear with me.

Today when I restarted my laptop, after about 20 minutes, the wireless network connection to my WiFi router suddenly broke, and then Manjaro managed to connect again within a few seconds, by itself. Just before the connection broke, I experienced a slower internet speed and hickups.

I know that Networkmanager’s log can be viewed with this command:

sudo journalctl -e -u NetworkManager

so I will copy/paste the part of the log that is relevant for this session, namely since Sep 22 17:38:42 onwards. The connection is called “telenor88” and you can see that the string “NetworkManager state is now CONNECTED_GLOBAL” appears three times, although I am aware of only once it being disconnected.

The first time when it connected upon booting is this:

Sep 22 17:39:06 bluestar-inspiron3521 NetworkManager[590]: <info> [1600789146.3219] manager: NetworkManager state is now CONNECTED_GLOBAL

and that is fine. That’s just afrer booting.

The next time it connected is the problematic time when I suspect something weird happened. It’s probably this line:

Sep 22 17:57:13 bluestar-inspiron3521 NetworkManager[590]: <info> [1600790233.8818] manager: NetworkManager state is now CONNECTED_GLOBAL

For those of you who understand these network logs, can you see anything suspicious between these two times/lines that might give us a clue as to what caused the computer to lose the connection? I would be especially interested in learning if there is something that might suggest the existence of some virus/rootkit that intentionally caused the connection to break (hopefully that’s not the case!)

“CONNECTED_GLOBAL” also appears for the third time at 17:57:54, but I don’t remember seeing the connection break again at that time.

Here is the entire log for this session:

I’m sorry to have to do this to you but:

Please read this:

and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…

An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host would be the minimum required information… (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)

P.S. If you enter a bit more details in your profile, we can also see which Desktop Environment you’re using, which CPU/GPU you have, …

Furthermore:

  1. Do you have MAC address randomization turned on? (“I don’t even know what this is” means: no! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: )
  2. Do you have a need for a VPN for any reason?

:innocent:

Okay, I apologize, I didn’t know about the need for the additional information. Here it is:

It’s an older Dell laptop from 2013 or so. It has the problematic Broadcom WiFi card, but with Manjaro I didn’t have any serious issues with it.

I do use a VPN service (program Eddie from AirVPN).
I don’t even know what MAC address randomization is.

I have a rather cheap Wifi router obtained from my ISP (Huawei) which offers an option to make the connection hidden (i.e. to disable SSID Broadcast). So, when I try to connect to it, I use Manjaro’s “Connect to hidden Wi-Fi network”.

Perhaps it’s useful to mention that when I create a new WiFi connection (e.g. after changing the password and/or name of the connection), Manjaro will find that connection, then ask me to confirm the name of the connection and password again. So I have to enter these credentials twice, so to speak. I don’t know if this is expected behavior or not.

Usually, the connection will not break at all throughout the day, at least not visibly like yesterday, although I do sometimes see in the logs that it was disconnected and then reconnected. I keep that Wifi router very close to the laptop, so it’s unlikely that the connection can break due to weak signal.

If there’s any other information I need to provide, please let me know.

Kernel 5.7 is EOL so please upgrade to an LTS or a higher version.

Definitely 5.8 or higher.

You seem to be having a tunnel for something or the other: Can you remove that or is it essential to you?

Apparently it is essential:

IPV6 can cause disconnection problems on some routers / for some ISPs. Can you disable that on both your client and router?

 See comment above about 5.8.

:innocent: Let’s assume it’s turned off and start with what we already know and have.

Actually it provides no security at all. Instead of the router advertising an SSID, all of your equipment trying to connect to the router is now advertising it:¹ Please turn that off.

Does that also happen if you create a second user on your system and try to connect that one? (after having applied all of the above)

As you have a Broadcom: Does it happen when you use Bluetooth? If you have no Bluetooth devices: Turn that :poop: off too.

Lat’s start there and feed back please?

:innocent:

Note 1: yes, it’s less advertising than a broadcasted SSID but to a hacker, there is no difference between the two anyway and it’s old technology from around the WEP time and provides a false sense of security.

Ok, I did most of the things you suggested and I’ve been testing the network connection for a couple of days now. It seems the issue stopped happening, although it’s a bit too early to tell for sure.

I updated to the latest kernel and I switched off the option to hide SSID (so now the router is broadcasting it openly).

I disabled IPV6 in my VPN program, but I am not sure how to do that “on my client”. In my router settings I don’t see an option to switch off IVP6 at all.

As for the strange behavior upon creating a new connection, when I am asked to provide the credentials for that connection twice, I experimented with a different user and it still asks me twice for credentials. Let me try to explain this in more detail.

Lets say my main user on this machine is “bluestar”. If I create a new connection in my router called “telenor55a” it will ask me twice to provide the credentials for this new connection. But this happens only when I want to connect for the very first time. Any subsequent attempt for that connection goes normally, i.e. I am asked to provide credentials once.

Switching the user to, say, “rocky” doesn’t change the above described behavior. If I try to connect to a connection that has already been used on my main user (telenor55a), it will ask me to provide credentials only once. But if it is an entirely new connection (e.g. “telenor55b”) that hasn’t been used at all on my main user, it will ask me to provide credentials twice - which is the same situation I see on the main user.

Is this behavior normal or does it suggest something fishy?

As I said in the beginning, in the past few days I haven’t encountered the disconnection issue again, but I’m still not convinced it’s gone for good. Thanks for your help!

OK, I have a similar issue, tho with a wired Ethernet connection. I’ll do my best to provide details as you require. If the info below is insufficient please let me know what else you may find helpful. If I cannot solve this problem I will have to jump off Manjaro to either OpenSuSE tumbleweed or MX Linux. Manjaro Deepin is my 1st Arch based distro, but had to chg to KDE due to its unreliability starting last year. MX Linux is great, but not a rolling release. I hate the hassle of OS upgrades which tend to break things I’ve installed after the OS.

First, let me provide some general background.

1- I have this problem with all kernels, but it’s far worse with 5.x versions.

2- I have seen it with Manjaro versions 19 and 20, deepin, xfce and kde variants.

3- I have eliminated all hardware, vpn and isp variables, it’s definitely a an OS issue. Could be in Debian root, so I installed the latest OpenSuSE Tumbleweed and I do not see the problem with that OS.

4- I have another system with an old Fedora 23 kernel acting as a proxy to other Debian VMs and don’t see the problem there either.

5- The major symptom I’m seeing is random network connection dropouts, which often trigger a system lockup requiring reboot. At the very least it kills my VPN connection. System lockup or user session lockups are also occurring randomly but not very frequently. This seems to indicate a low level bug with a driver or in the kernel.

Hardware: Asus Ultrabook UX490. Uses a USB-C (Thunderbolt) dongle for wired network. I have used 2 different dongles, both stable no problem under OpenSuSE.

From KDE System Info:
Operating System: Manjaro Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.19.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.73.0
Qt Version: 5.15.0
Kernel Version: 5.8.6-1-MANJARO
OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 8 × Intel® Core™ i7-8550U CPU @ 1.80GHz
Memory: 15.5 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® UHD Graphics 620

I’ve seen it happen to other people before. It could be a local save first and then a system-wide save. I need to know what you’re doing exactly. :man_shrugging:

Oh, so you don’t trust me???

:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

If you have a separate issue for which the solution of this issue does not work, please create a new topic and refer to this one if it provides context.

I was basing my post applicability to the title of this thread, so it isn’t clear to me this was hijacking.

That said I did find some useful things to try the suggestions you mentioned in your solutions link (if those were regarded as truly solutions they should be marked as such). Disabling IPv6 and MAC randomization. I don’t know if MAC randomization is even available on Tumbleweed.

I noticed there is no “Disable” method, so I used “Ignore” for the IPv6 tab of network config. Is that the same thing?

No worries, no harm done, just create your own topic

:innocent:

Done

Ok, sorry about a little delay. I don’t know how to explain it better except to show you what I do exactly, which is why I recorded this little video. I created two wi-fi connections, “testing1” and “testing2”. When I try to connect to each of them, I am first asked to provide the credentials twice. But every subsequent attempt to connect to a connection that has already been used requires no credentials (i.e. it connects automatically), or I am asked only once for the credentials.

Please see the video and let me know if you think this behavior is a cause for concern or not.

I have no security concerns: the first time is to try the connection to the WiFi network, the second one to save into the local keyring.

Also, you have a different desktop to mine (I’m on KDE, so I’m asking for an expert opinion on side channel chat) Confirmed no issue.

:innocent:

Great! Thank you for your help.
Hopefully the issue with random disconnecting will not happen again.

I’ve marked the below answer as the solution to your question as it is by far the best answer you’ll get.

However, if you disagree with my choice, please feel free to take any other answer as the solution to your question or even remove the solution altogether: You are in control! (I just want to avoid even more subjective opinions being posted and confusing you even more)

:innocent:
P.S. In the future, please mark a solution like this:
Solution
so that the next person that has the exact same problem you just had will benefit from your post as well as your question will now be in the “solved” status.
