'net usershare' returned error 255... - Sharing Files From the File Manager based on the wiki

Dear Manjaro Support Team,

I installed the newest Community maintained Manjaro with cinnamon Desktop yesterday to my 15" Macbook Pro, mid-2010, using this .iso file: (https://download.manjaro.org/cinnamon/21.3.7/manjaro-cinnamon-21.3.7-220826-linux515.iso)

I wanted to follow the method described in the wiki under Using Samba in your File Manager - Manjaro to share my

/home/Downloads

folder using the File Manager to access that share from Windows 11in the same LAN. Could someone help me out (maybe this case would be helpful to improve the Manjaro Wiki as well for unexperienced but passionate Linux users :slight_smile:

Here in the Manjaro Wiki from which I followed this tutorial:
(Using Samba in your File Manager - Manjaro)

Installation

Depending on which file manager you use there are different packages to install. Please reference the appropriate section for your file manager.

The manjaro-settings-samba package will install a basic config and enable the file sharing services. The whole process is nicely automated. Let me share with you what happened in details:
(Using Samba in your File Manager - Manjaro)

1.) I started in the terminal:

Installing manjaro-settings-samba (20220924-1)...                          [1/1]
==> Attempting to enable Samba services...Created symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/smb.service → /usr/lib/systemd/system/smb.service.
Created symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/nmb.service → /usr/lib/systemd/system/nmb.service.
==> Adding user 'b....s' to user-group 'sambashare'
==> Samba services should now be enabled.==> Please add new users to 'sambashare' group.==> Reboot your system, so changes will take effect..
Transaction successfully finished.

2.) The rebooted the system.

3.) Opened the File Manager, selected the Downloads folder, right-clicked on it, and selected the “Sharing Options” from the popup menu.

4.) Ticked the “Share this folder” and the “Allow others to create and delete files in this folder” After pressing the “Create Share” button on this panel the following error appears:
Screenshot from 2022-12-12 20-57-28

‘net usershare’ returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot convert name “Everyone” to a SID. The transport connection is now disconnected…

:left_speech_bubble: This is a fresh installation, so I did not even start configuring Samba by commands in Termina as my goal was to check whether it can be done in the Cinnamon GUI, following strictly the Manjaro Wiki. :left_speech_bubble:

What should I do?

Please use the search function. Your problem is not new.

In short:

  • The problem are the apparmor rules for smb and I am not quite sure it is exactly.
  • When disabling apparmor completely it works again.

I don’t know any other easy solution than that.

Anyhow it needs investigations what exactly is missing or differ here, but I am not capable to that, plus I dont’t use samba.
