Need Help Updating GPU driver

TL;DR, How do I update my hard drive?

I previously had Manjaro about 1 or 2 years ago but decided to return to Windows 10 because I kept running into road blocks and couldn’t get the hang of things. I just recently decided to return to Linux and instead of using just Manjaro I decided to Dual Boot Manjaro and Windows 10 on separate SSD’s so that I can work from home and have the option to switch between the two if a new video game is released and can not run on Linux.

Right now I am trying to update my GPU so that I can play video games but whenever I try to launch my games in Steam the game closes immediately before I can see anything. The games that I am currently trying to run are [Prototype], The Song Of Saya, DIsco Elysium and Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!. I’ve tried searching for help on ProtonDB but nothing works. Just recently I switched from Linux Mint to Manjaro GNOME and when I was with Mint I was able to get pretty much anything I wanted up and running doing the exact same thing that I am doing here. When I tried to download Lutris it said “Your NVIDIA driver is outdated. You are currently running driver 390.144 which does not fully support all features for Vulkan and DXVK games. PLease upgrade your driver as described in our installation guide.” https://paste.pics/94a0857083b21326e0a7eef45832194e but when I follow the installation guide this is what I get…

sudo pacman -S --needed nvidia-dkms nvidia-utils lib32-nvidia-utils nvidia-settings vulkan-icd-loader lib32-vulkan-icd-loader

error: target not found: nvidia-settings
warning: vulkan-icd-loader-1.2.194-1 is up to date -- skipping
warning: lib32-vulkan-icd-loader-1.2.194-1 is up to date -- skipping

I also tried updating my GPU through (manjaro settings>hardware configuration) but that did not work either.

How can I fix? Could you give me some tips on how to setup my OS for gaming? Please explain this to me in as simple terms as possible because as I said I am very new to this.
Thank you for your time and patience in advance.

Hi @SYFLDN, and welcome!

While I doubt I’ll be able to help you, for more than 1 reason, I can point you here, so long: How to provide good information and, if applicable, [HowTo] post screenshots and links.

Thank you @Mirdarthos.

Does your card support newer drivers?

mhwd -l

@CSCS Don’t know.

 mhwd -l  ✔

Doesnt look like it does.
mhwd offers 390, 470, and current (495) … if your card was supported by any of the other ones it would be offered.

I also wanted to mention that when I downloaded Manjaro GNOME Steam was not automatically installed like it was supposed to be. Maybe I should just try and re-install the whole OS and start from scratch.

I had everything working fine before on a different Linux OS. What should I do?

Could I log into my Windows 10 SSD and update the GPU with the Nvidia software?

That sounds like a better idea … then maybe we can help with what it is you want to do.

Ah. not the windoze thing … that wont change anything about the driver in linux.

As to ‘other distros’ … its possible they were still serving some deprecated nvidia driver between the versions we offer here.

just for understanding ,UEFI-[Legacy]
that means :

  1. disks will be formated as MBR
  2. Do not Mix MBR & GPT disks

try to get USB manjaro iso lastest version ,
if you choose No free drivers ( nvidia ) , you can check with live manjaro under terminal

nvidia-smi

kernels give a magic number that is required for build nvidia drivers ,
DO NOT BUILD from site Nvidia , in case of not matching with kernel , it wont start after.

using mhwd is only the solution

It does indeed. On the stable branch, video-nvidia is NVIDIA v470. In the testing and unstable branches, it’s 495 and video-nvidia-470xx was added.

That’s for Arch, not Manjaro. We don’t have a separate nvidia-settings package.

See Configure Graphics Cards - Manjaro

I tryed it. Didn’t work.

Warning: no configs for USB devices found!

But according to the Nvidia website the latest driver should be 470.86. So how do I get 470.86? Should I try a different Kernel?

You probably installed the MINIMAL version of Manjaro GNOME. Install the Full Manjaro GNOME ISO instead. Minimal version of Manjaro provides only the bare minimum packages for the system to be usable (web browser, text editor, things like that only), but nothing more and you’ll have to install many application by yourself to have a proper basic desktop experience.

Also installing video drivers for your Nvidia card is as simple as running the proper command

This is not the command written in the Manjaro WIKI to install Nvidia video drivers.

You don’t even have to use the command line. You can do that from Manjaro Settings → Hardware Configuration, right click driver and select Install or Remove.

You currently have video-linux (the open source video driver), remove it, remove the Nvidia driver, and reinstall the Nvidia video driver for the proper configuration.

sudo mhwd -r pci video-linux
sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia
sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia

You install what Manjaro provides. Currently, on the Stable branch of Manjaro, it is 470.63 (provided by video-nvidia). The 470.86 version is available on Testing branch (provided by video-nvidia-470xx, as well as the 495 version (provided by video-nvidia, the Testing branch provides more up to date packages, and the Unstable branch provides even more up to date packages, refer to Manjaro - Fresh & Stable)

I recommend you stay on the Stable branch if you already have trouble configuring the system. No need to complicate things. Documentation for Manjaro branches is here though Switching Branches - Manjaro

EDIT: if you reinstall, boot Manjaro USB with proprietary drivers it will auto install Nvidia in theory.

Thank you so much @omano. I finally got it working. Your the greatest.
