My whole system seems to freeze at random

#1

So my system has frozen twice today. If I had to guess it is because my usb driver crashes or something like that. Because my headphones stops playing music (USB bluetooth) and my keyboard and mouse don’t do anything anymore. While I can still see the blinking cursor of the terminal.

At the time of the freeze I think I only had chromium, libreoffice writer and a terminal open. Spotify and discord were also running on i3 scratchpads.

I have been running Manjaro for a little bit over a week now and this problem only occurred today for the first time. I haven’t made any major changes in the last few days so I don’t see why it occurred suddenly (I only replaced dmenu with rofi yesterday).

If you have done an update many things might have changed that could have caused this. Try kernel 4.20 and 4.14. Install kernels through Manjaro Settings Manager, and always have at least two kernels installed at all times for safety.

Post:

dmesg | grep 'usb error'

#3

The dmesg didn’t give any results, even when grepping with ‘usb.*error’. And when just grepping usb, I couldn’t see any errors at first glance too.

Also when I tried 4.20 the polychromatic driver didn’t seem to register my devices so I switched back to 4.19.

#4

I don’t know if it will boot properly, but I’d definitely try kernel 4.14.

Sorry, I was meaning to give:

dmesg | grep 'usb\|error'

Please post:

journalctl -p err -S "$(date +'%Y-%m-%d')"

Scroll to the end of the error list, then post the full output here.

So I still randomly have this issue and I found out that it is not primarily usb related, but it is probably related to the whole system (the clock doesn’t change). My computer just freezes completely, but it will still keep showing the same frame on my monitors.

Also I have switched to a newer kernel. But it doesn’t seem like it has made any difference.

Looks like there are BIOS updates available:

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/X470-GAMING-PRO#down-bios

Many Ryzen issues are fixed via BIOS updates (and I’d know, I run two Ryzen systems now, both of which have gained stability via BIO updates).

#8

So it looks like you send me a link to the wrong motherboard page (I wasn’t smart enough to double check…). I have the PRO version not the PLUS. Luckily the bios is smart enough to not recognize incompatible versions. So I figured out after a while that the reason that no BIOS update option is showing up, is because it is incompatible.

So in the end I managed to update my BIOS. Hopefully this will fix it.

#9

They have two boards with the same model number… why… :man_facepalming:

#10

Wow, that’s weird… Anyway I haven’t had this issue occur so far, but this issue doesn’t seem to occur at any fixed time interval. So hopefully this will have fixed it, if doesn’t occur again within a month or so I think we can see this as fixed.

#11

Can this topic be closed? Since updating the bios like jonathan suggested has solved my issue. Thanks a lot again @jonathon !
