USB Controller needs to be replugged in to work

So I’ve been having an issue whereupon my arcade stick will not work with Linux unless unplugged and plugged back in. However, my Linux system does seem to detect it

Possibility of the same: USB mouse pointer doesn't work on resume from suspend
There you can find ideas to try and to find OP of that thread to unite in try to find solution for both of you.

Also you mentioned how you get back your device alive, but did not mention how you loses a work of it.

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and press the three dots below your post and press the :pencil2: to give us more information so we can see what’s really going on.
Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…
  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information for us to be able to help you. (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.

I was hoping the inxi output would help us locate the “arcade stick” but we’re still clueless… Which of the following are you talking about?

Bus 005 Device 005: ID 0c12:0e30 Zeroplus P4 Wired Gamepad

(Or something else entirely???)

@thecrimsoneye, prefer to keep a secrets?

@Fabby It’s the Zeroplus P4 Wired Gamepad. @alven I’m not quite sure what you meant by that statement.

you wrote:

USB Controller needs to be replugged in to work

The question is:
Is it after some time of normal work process, the USB controller stops to work normally?
If yes, than which event triggers that work mode to be modified or at least after which events that occurs?
The answer could have a huge influence to point the way and to find solution.

@alven Oh I gotcha. It stops working upon reboot.

What’s the output of the

sudo lsusb -v -s 5:5

?

@alven

Please:

  1. Try the latest stable Development kernel (5.14) and see if the problem goes away automagically. (95% certain it will not)
  2. Update your UEFI firmware: (90% certain 1 and 2 together won’t help)
  3. Contact the vendor for a firmware update: this seams like an UEFI initialisation error and the kernel doesn’t know what to do.

@thecrimsoneye
Good logging posts: now we can compare both states of the device: before and after re-plug.

Here are an Ideas how to spend your weekend  :

For now just noted:
before re-plug

    bmAttributes 0x80
      (Bus Powered)
    MaxPower 500mA

after re-plug

    bmAttributes 0xc0
      Self Powered
    MaxPower 500mA

bus vs self-powered.

So somehow bus power is not enough?
May be it has some modes to switch: try to switch to another mode with possible lower power consumption to see if it has influence on the issue.

Does the device has any power source (e.g. batteries) inside? Otherwise still can’t interpret “self-powered”, except solar battery panel or your mechanical pressing on its buttons produces an energy to make the device to operate?

How old is it? May be electrical capacitors on the comes to its’ end of life and needs to be replaced? If it is several years old, than may be to disassemble the device? Open its case covering electrical components inside (but be sure that you unplugged it and after unplugging you pressed all buttons several times to discharge capacitors fully to prevent an electric shock if suddenly you will touch it contacts/pins) just to make visual observation what could be wrong with hardware itself.
Does the electrical board looks accurate without any dirty-looking not-as-produced-on-a-factory places?

capacitors, which close or yet ends their life looks like this

Good on left, end-of-its-life on right:

Bad:

Please come back alive to us

May be somehow to setup the device to be as self-powered always even on PC bootup so without tries of bus power?
May be UEFI has some USB power or selected USB suspending settings?

May be you can try to plug it into USB 3+ ports? It has not less than 900 mA current.
Does the cable of device is undamaged?

Also,

Does the journalctl -p3 -b is empty from that USB device-related errors?

Check kernel logs journalctl -k for the USB device-related messages.

When the issue starts to occur? May be repairing the device, cleaning, or you moved from one house to another (physical damage of the device or cable while moving).

Does the device works well directly after PC boot a week/month/year, e.g. sometime ago or the issue was always since it usage starts?

Does the device after re-plug work perfect or has some “mini freezes” (a few seconds or fraction of second) like it is re-initializing?

Here’s what I get with journal -3 -b

@thecrimsoneye :

@alven Next time better split your answer between and answer and then a few numbers for the questions. Now it’s hard for the OP to follow what you’re asking…

:bowing_man:

  1. It occurs upon reboot.
  2. It’s happened since the beginning. Even with my last Manjaro systems, this has been an issue.
  3. It works perfectly after plugging in.

I updated the firmware, and huzzah!

@Fabby Okay I spoke too soon. While the OS does recognize it from go, Steam is having difficulties recognizing it at all.

That’s no longer a Manjaro isse: file a bug upstream…

If you don’t know what that means, read this:

Especially the section What’s this Upstream / Downstream business?

Also, I don’t run Steam…
