Moving from Arch to Manjaro

Hi there
I’m running an outdated Arch (with Xfce) on my lap-top (for a series of reasons it was impossible to keep it updated for several months). I’m considering installing Manjaro from scratch, meaning a totally new installation, destroying the (old) Arch.

2 questions:

1 - Is it possible to “insert” my present [home] in the new Manjaro? I did it already from this Arch to another machine running Mint and it worked… I just had to install all the similar packages before “inserting” my home. I would like to do the same and be in my “environment” without much work…

2 - My lap-top is a (old) Samsung New series9:

  • Intel(R) Core™ i5-3317U CPU @ 1.70GHz
  • 8Gb RAM
  • 125 Gb SDD
Will I be able to install Manjaro with no major hardware problems?!?

Thanks for all your support
Slira

Hi @slira, and welcome!

  1. Considering Manjaro is a fork of Arch, I think it would be possible to do so. Even better and easier than Mint, as you mentioned.
  2. I suspect it would be fine. However, to get more than a guess you’d have to give more details than that. Like manufacturer and model of the laptop’s motherboard, network controller, etc.

Hope this helps!

Thank you [Mirdarthos] for the swift answer!
I’ll gather a list of hw and will post it shortly

You do that, but if it works in Arch, I have no doubt it will work in Manjaro. Anyway, someone can tell me if I’m wrong.

Hi there

using sudo lshw I get the follwoing; can anyone please check and let me know if Manjaro will install on the hw? Thanks in advance!

It shouldn’t be a problem to keep your $HOME, but one can’t say 100% for sure, since Manjaro is not Arch.

(Please edit your output from above as code using the </> button.)

Please properly format your post, always select your console output and click the </> button to properly format it. Thanks.

upsssssss, sorry, I’m not used to post on forums…

No problem. You have to edit your post by selecting the text and then format with the </> tool, or replace “</>” by “```”.

So that it will look like this:

Bla
bla
blaa

got it! thanks, and sorry for wasting your time with such a thing…

More helpful would be the output of inxi -Fazy (inxi on Arch is only available in the aur, though - if that’s a problem.)

yeap… that would be a problem because the OS is so outdated I’m not able to install new packages (I risk destroying everything… dependencies will never work). That’s why I’m considering a new installation, from scratch. I’m very happy with Arch - rock-solid, great performance - but installation is (let’s put it like this) a lot of work!

Got it (and inxi is quite hungry).
I once kept my $HOME the other way around without issues, but then I didn’t have any DE installed, just a WM.

EDIT: Hardware-wise the only big difference that comes to mind is that there are fewer kernel iterations available on Manjaro, but if you go with the LTS there shouldn’t be any issues either.

Thanks again.
If and when I install I’ll post the result

Hi All
I finally installed Manjaro in this machine (a lapt-top Samsung S9).

What I did:

  • prepared a USB pen with the image
  • boot from there
  • started the installer and order to keep partitions
(I have 4 partions, sda1-4 (boot, swap, OS and home) in my SSD)
  • “told” Manjaro to install in sda3
  • after installation and reboot I edited the etc/fstab in order to mount the (preserved) home
  • then I installed all missing packages (my applications that were not by default in the Manjaro installation)
  • another reboot and… TCHARAM!!! I was in my “environment”; all (really: all) my configurations, passwords, favourites, e.mail, etc. etc. were OK.

Bottom line: in my case migrating from an (outdated) Arch to an updated Manjaro was quick and easy.

Thanks for your support!
