Monitor Stopped Working Suddenly -- Displays at login, not after

Installed Manjaro, dual boot, a few days ago. External monitor worked fine for first two days, randomly stopped working today. Only main differences I can think of is updated kernel and install howdy.

On Display settings, I can find the monitor, but it is disabled. When I click to enable it, it does not work/turn-it-on. Sometimes this freezes up my laptop’s screen as well. I do not think I see it in xrandr.

Monitor does work (mirrors screen) on login screen, but after logging in it goes away – get notification about compositor issue, but I have gone in and turned off “allow applications to block compositing” and start new desktop session upon login.

I have otherwise looked at topics, but not figuring it out (e.g. I do not think this laptop has nvidia, just intel).

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

  1. Congratulations on providing a inxi --full --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host on the first go! :hugs: :+1:
  2. Does this also happen when you create a new user and log in there?
  3. If yes, the output to xrandr --verbose might help.

:innocent:

Thank you so much for the help!

Switching to a new user did bring back my monitor (just for that account)! It also may have fixed a wifi issue I was having (every time I login, it asks for the wifi password… it was also always asking for the kde wallet password everytime until I just turned that off). A new user account also did not include a notification about “another application using the compositor” or whatever.

Interestingly, signing back into my main account from the login screen made my whole screen freeze, so I had to hard restart my computer.

Once I got back into my main account everything reverted back (including the monitor not working again). I hope that narrows it down.

Looks like you don’t need xrandr --verbose, but I’ll paste it below just in case!

Looks like creating a new user for you solves a lot of issues, so let’s not waste any time and copy (not move!) all your files over from the old user to the new user:

sudo cp --preserve=timestamps --recursive /home/fcdan/Documents/* /home/kcdan2/Documents/

if no errors:

sudo rm --recursive /home/kodah/Documents

repeat for bin, Pictures, Desktop, Downloads, Music, and Videos

in 6 months, delete the remaining files from “kcdah”, and forget this ever happened, but don’t delete the user itself so the system will still give you a name instead of a number if you run into some old files from kcdah in the far future.

Thank you!!

Do you think the issue might be from a specific software I have downloaded? I would like to recreate the new user to look the way I have my current one, but I am concerned trying to do that may just create the same issue(s).

Like I said in a nutshell before:

The long version:

Looks like your old user profile is a sick puppy with a lot of sicknesses: I’m euthanising it and giving you a new puppy. Trying to find out what exactly you did wrong is going to take days if not weeks.

Having said that, one of the most recurring mistakes is this one:

(Not saying you do a very hard reboot, but lots of people do)

That makes sense — thank you! Hopefully I don’t make a similar mistake!

Dumb question — I am not finding a /home/kcdah/bin to copy over. Is it possible I just don’t have it? Or is bin in another location? I have everything else.

If you don’t have any user shell scripts, that is normal: take the directories that do exist. :innocent:

Thanks again. After copying everything and over in the manner you described (and doing nothing else) I have run into the same issue with my new user now with the monitor. Unsure why that would be. Also get that compositor warning again.

The only thing I didn’t do is remove those folders from my old account to, mostly because I wanted to double check everything copied over well first.

Hmm ok, I was able to get it back with display configurations without it freezing up on me for once. I hope it will continue to work like this without freezing.

Still odd that it starts with disabling the screen though.

I will happily mark solution — I just want to make sure it’s permanently fixed for the next few days.

Regardless, I made the changes to make sure I always turn it off safely when needed!

That’s weird… It must be something else. Please feed back in a couple of days as I’m all out of ideas right now.

OK, related issue – I do not have write permissions to these new folders. For instance, I cannot save a file to my Documents folder in this new account or move files to it. I tried sudo chmod +rwx Documents which did not throw an error, but it did not fix the issue. I assume this is related to copying over the folders from my other account/profile.

What can I do?

Thanks!

oh sorry:

sudo cp --preserver=time-stamps --recursive /home/fcdan/Documents/* /home/kcdan2/Documents/

so you’re preserving the time attribute only, not the permissions as otherwise your new user would not have access to these files as the old user is the owner. (and why you copy, not move, as move always preserves everything)

Awesome, great thanks!. Just a heads up to anyone else reading this, I had to do (change preserver to preserve and time-stamps to timestamps).

sudo cp --preserve=timestamps --recursive /home/oldlogin/Documents/* /home/newlogin/Documents/

I’ve edited it into the original and marked that as solution…

Thanks for letting me know!
