Monitor does not turn on (no image) on startup and after wake (Plasma5)

Hello all! I have a super frustrating problem that I have no been able to solve, and having gone through the forum, it seems others have had this issue as well, however either their solution did not solve my issues or their problems are equally unsolved!

Every time I boot my computer up, my main monitor (2K HDMI Samsung) fails to show an image. It wakes up, like its a black screen but the monitor is clearly lit. My second monitor, a 1080p (Displayport to) HDMI samsung monitor, works fine with waking and having an image, and it displays my second window (no taskbar, etc) so its like the computer knows I have two monitors plugged in. It isnt until i unplug my main monitor and plug it back in, that kde will reshuffle itself around and display to both monitors properly.

This is an extremely annoying problem, one that i have no idea how to solve and has proven not to be easily fixed by checking the wiki or googling, and I sort of feel like a burden on the discord group so im hoping someone will help me out here, because this does seem to be a bigger issue. I’ve tried some solutions, from as simple as disabling and reenabling my main monitor in the settings, to booting the computer with only one of the two monitors plugged in, to changing my drivers from 455 to 440, from free to proprietary, etc… Nothing works. I made an account of this forum to post this question… so this is my last attempt ahaha.

Thanks a lot! Cheers!

This is strange! It should work. Both outputs show both monitors active with native resolutions. What happens if you change TTY and back?

wow thats so funny! Yeah going into tty and back to graphic desktop makes my monitor wake up with an image. I guess it accomplishes the same “refresh” type thing without needing to physically unplug and replug? this is a good temporary solution, but what can i do so this no longer happens?

Im thinking of doing a fresh install if there are no solutions, hopefully that will solve this along with other small problems i have with the way my system behaves.

Thanks alot for this tho!

I had that problem myself and I’ve seen it happen to other users. It has nothing to do with multimonitor. It just happens and suddenly goes away and it can come back in the future. I have never seen a definite solution for this. Reinstalling the system will solve it for now, but it doesn’t guarantee you that it won’t happen again. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth the hassle.

okay, maybe is a system update thing! Well, if there is no solution, i guess this is all we’v got, so ill mark your reply as the solution!

Thanks so much for making my first interaction on this forum a positive one!
cheers!
