When “upgrade on system shutdown” is enabled, and the system tries to update packages on shutdown, I get the following screen, which appears to be missing fonts, given the squares that appear under the loading bar. What font packages are needed to restore whatever text is supposed to be there?

I got it, I believe it was the mkinitcpio.conf.pacnew. Once I replaced my existing mkinitcpio.conf, the fonts appeared. Was probably the consolefont hook.
Update on shutdown is a bad idea. You cannot react at all before rebooting if something goes wrong. Of course it needs a user who can spot what is going wrong in the logs to counterreact
Just some friendly advice… Never blindly copy a .pacnew over your existing configuration file. You are supposed to merge them instead.
