Missing fonts on shutdown update screen?

When “upgrade on system shutdown” is enabled, and the system tries to update packages on shutdown, I get the following screen, which appears to be missing fonts, given the squares that appear under the loading bar. What font packages are needed to restore whatever text is supposed to be there?

Have you tended to your .pacnew files?
Something seems to be missing in /etc … and not be included in /etc/mkinicpio.conf

What do you mean by “tended to your .pacnew files”?

I got it, I believe it was the mkinitcpio.conf.pacnew. Once I replaced my existing mkinitcpio.conf, the fonts appeared. Was probably the consolefont hook.

Update on shutdown is a bad idea. You cannot react at all before rebooting if something goes wrong. Of course it needs a user who can spot what is going wrong in the logs to counterreact

Just some friendly advice… Never blindly copy a .pacnew over your existing configuration file. You are supposed to merge them instead.

Yes, it is. It is one of those horrible things that Microsoft users have come to demand in GNU/Linux because that’s what they were used to from Windows.
