Microphone signal is lagging video signal on video calls

I encounter troubles regarding my microphone signal, when making video calls via the browser.

In fact, my voice is very much delayed (approx 2s), which is pretty annoying.

I already tried different input sources, i.e.

  • Bluetooth mic from headset
  • usb mic from web cam.

Unfortunately, both lead to the same delay.

This is my system:

Can someone kindly provide some help/ ideas?

Thanks!

Hi, I’m no expert with audio issues but have frequently had problems with audio lag during e.g. Skype calls (Teams seems better in that respect).

It could of course be down to network latency, browser overheads etc.; is it consistently 2s?

Is it just with the browser (which one?) and which “service” are you using? … have you tried a standalone program? (Usually preferred, if available).

@BG405 , thanks for the ideas!

Finally, I varied the following setups:

  1. Browser: Firefox, Chrome
  2. App: Browser, OBS Studio
  3. Microphone: BT, USB, Analog
  4. Even the OS: Manjaro, Android

On the one hand, I always observe the same (long!) delay, when using any browser, even on my Android phone. On the other hand, the delay is much smaller, when using some other app in Manjaro (like OBS Studio) for audio delay testing purposes.

Consequently, I think this topic does not belong here, since Manjaro is doing a fine job in combination with e.g. OBS. I’ll forward the issue to the support of the video platform.

Thanks again!

It does seem like a browser issue then. Maybe some add-on interfering or, as mentioned, overheads causing the lag.

I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to have htop running in a Terminal to see what resources are being used. (You might need to install this first; I find it better than the regular top).
