Manjaro XFCE won't boot after several freezes on HP Elitebook 840 G3

Hello, this is my first post here.
The Manjaro installation used to run fine for a couple of weeks. One day, the system freezed and crashed but would boot again. This happened several times and now it doesn’t boot anymore.

(Side note: this happened before on the same computer with Linux Mint 20.1. I changed to Manjaro because of this, hoping it was a compability error.)

When I try to boot I get a black screen with some error messages starting with:
switch root: failed to execute /sbin/init: Input/output error
Kernel panic …
(Screenshots are not allowed here and I have no other option to copy the text.)

Please help me to find out whether this is an hardware issue or not. In either way please help me fix it, thank you.

Here is the results of inxi, manjaro chroot, and dmesg run from a live USB version:

What is the next step?

try
sudo manjaro-chroot -a

The result is the very same with and without sudo.

is there any partition btrfs ?
if not classical way
see manual chroot
https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=GRUB/Restore_the_GRUB_Bootloader

if always error can be very bad on /usr/sbin , see size !
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=243149

There are 3 partitions:
/dev/sda1 is fat32 with 300 MiB | boot, esp
/dev/sda2 is ext4 with 467 GiB
/dev/sda3 is linux-swap with 8,8 GiB | swap
and about 6 MiB of unallocated space

Ok thank you. I’ll try.

I tried pacman -Syu grub

Still no change.
switch root: failed to execute /sbin/init: Input/output error
Kernel panic …

Has anyone another idea?

Just some guesses en things I would check in this situation, I hope you reach a solution.

Have you checked the smart values of the the drive using smartctl and check the drive for errors? (I prefer the gnome live environment for gnome disks)
sudo smartctl --all /dev/sda
sudo smartctl --test=short /dev/sda

Does journalctl --boot --priority=err or
sudo dmesg -l emerg,alert,crit,err,warn
give any leads on drive hardware issues when booting from the live disk?

Thank you. Smart seems to be fine, but your other ideas hint to several “ACPI Errors”:

fsck.ext2: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks...
fsck.ext2: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a valid ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
 or
    e2fsck -b 32768 <device>

/dev/sda contains `DOS/MBR boot sector; partition 1 : ID=0xee, start-CHS (0x0,0,2), end-CHS (0x3ff,255,63), startsector 1, 1000215215 sectors, extended partition table (last)' data
