this looks like a hardware issue … or some bios setting messing things up…
yes i also fear bios updates, when there goes something wrong, you are finished…
edit: also try unpluging it from mobo and pluging it back again

Eureka, those were the most anxious 10 min of my life! Seems like updating my BIOS to V10.H (latest non-beta update) works perfectly, Xorg runs up and I have access to CUDA like before! Thank you so much for your time and patience @brahma @Olli !
