Manjaro with Ryzen 3 3200g (Vega 8) any experience ?

Since I'm new on this forum and this is my first post - Greetings to all members! :slight_smile:

After years on Intel + nvidia combos on Linux, I am planning to switch to AMD, and it will be Ryzen 3 3200g with Vega 8 integrated. Motherboard will be based on B450 chipset.

I am trying to find some information on how well now 3200g works with Linux, as I want to know what issues could I expect. I am most interested in direct experience if any of forum members here have this CPU, and how well and stable it performs on Manjaro. Of course I allready googled for some info on this topic, but it is not very conclusive, so I prefer to hear direct experiences.

I assume the BIOS on motherboard is up to date, and firmware's are updated too.

So.. any expirience with those? :slight_smile:

choose enough for dual cache video ram that can go to 2Go

I will have 8gb of system RAM in this PC, what exactly did you mean here, what to chose?
I guess, since Vega 8 is integrated graphics, it uses as much RAM as you allow it.

Can't help you with the specific Ryzen, I have a Ryzen 5 1400.

My MSI B350 mobo does get a lot of updates, every few months. You can update over USB on MSI mobo's quite easily.

I believe B450 will be updated even more often.

Yeah, I allways keep my BIOS up to date on every machine.
Almost every new gen mobo's have that option to easy update bios.

The problem is I can't find much Ryzen 3 3200g users on Linux... I'm interested in that particular piece of hardware on Linux, it is Zen+ (not Zen2), code-named "Picasso".

And one other thig is also interesting me, since I do not plan to use any dedicated
graphic card, how well dual-monitor will work on that integrated Vega 8, since dual monitor is must have for my work...

How well it works with Linux? Can you post your system info?

I am not new to Linux but have less than 6 months using Manjaro.

I built this hardware system 3 months ago and am very happy, Manjaro runs very well on it.

Thanks aaanadie, but both you and cofeetron have an AMD processor without integrated
graphics, most of my concerns are how that Vega integrated graphics is supported
and how well it will work and what issues could I expect.

So, I'm interested only in AMD processors with Vega 8 integrated experiences,
not AMD processors generally, as they alone don't have any special reason not to
work well with Linux. AMD integrated GPU's on the other side are another story... :slight_smile:

my notebook has a 3500U which has a Vega 8 integrated. Absolutely no issues with that. The only thing you should keep in mind is: GPU performance gains a lot when high speed dual channel RAM (2 slots) is used compared to single channel RAM (1 slot).
The reason is that the APU's use the RAM as memory, and dual channel basically doubles the GPU's memory speed. Almost all AMD APU's are limited through memory speed. Using RAM with 3200MHz or more would be my recommendation, too.

those APU's are "old" enough to have proper Linux support.

i now have ryzen 5 3400g.
using with single 16gb 3000mhz ram.
and it works okay with wayland and wayfire
just some occasional glitches not sure if its wayland or vega 11.

@Librewish, thanks for your input, this looks promising... if Vega 11 works
ok, Vega 8 will probably too, because only difference is in number of cores I believe.

Do you maybe have a spare monitor to connect on other mobo port
and see if dual monitor setup works? :slight_smile:

no i have one monitor only

I plan to use 2 DDR4 modules of 4, or 2 modules of 8 gb, in any case two modules.
Motherboard I plan to use is Asus PRIME-B450M-K, so probably I will go with
2 modules on 3200Mhz with better latency like 15.

Normally it should work OK. With 18.1.2 we ship a new linux53 kernel. We will soon prepare 19.0 development ISOs with Linux54. The feedback is normally good now.

I'll get my Asrock Deskmini A300 with Ryzen 3400G & dual monitors next week.
Will install Manjaro XFCE and Manjaro KDE dualboot.
I'll check Steam Gaming and video encoding (Kdenlive).

We were unable to install any distribution on a Ryzen 3400G, MSI Mortar Max, BIOS updated. We always failed to load the live sessions. We finally succeeded to install 18.1.0 Architect. We even saw the lightdm login screen with Linux54 RC but right after login to the Xfce desktop our box always freezes with a green screen.

After plugging in an old Nvidia GTX-210 card to the PCI slot everything went smooth. We now happily run this system on Linux53 (stock 5.3.8.) but we do look forward for the Vega 11 APU support to land in the stable kernel branch. :smiley:

it is already there since months. Something else must be wrong on your end.

@Librewish - Ryzen 3 3200g is not Raven Ridge, it is Picasso (successor of Raven Ridge),
does this patch addresses it too?
