Did you try to hold the ALT key while booting, a menu should appear to choose where to boot from.

Alt key - just tried, no difference, no menu
Check in your BIOS menu that the option “Boot from USB” is enabled.
Or choose the correct boot option there in Boot tab.

may you give us some minimum information about the hardware you are using !

Thank you very much to one and all, especially Midarthos. My son-in-law figured out how to tell the bios the desired boot order. It involved moving a token (for lack of a better word) to a different position, I did not think of that. I used suggestions here to make a bootable flash drive and we restored from a Timeshift backup. Problem solved.
