Manjaro not booting after upgrade

Hi,
I have computer a little bit old (No UEFI), installed Manjaro everything was perfect until i tried to upgrade OS, it’s not booting to desktop any more.
I see Manjaro with 3 loading dots, i can see audio and video modules are loaded but after that nothings happening system just not booting.
i tried to log in using TTY but as soon as i hit Alt+Ctrl+Fx the tree loading dots stops moving and completely freezes.
I am sure i don’t have NVIDIA problem mentioned in lots of topics because my VGA is AMD
Any idea how to fix this?

Can you reach your Login Screen easily?

If so, you can try to launch a TTY shell from there. This is also the better way to perform an upgrade; without being logged into the GUI.

If you can login successfully this way, please provide the output from:

sudo inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

You can also save this output to a file, like this:

sudo inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width > inxi_output.txt

This will help others to help you further. Cheers.

no i can’t log in, as i mentioned if try to change TTY it completely freezes.
I don’t know what to do but i’m sure solution starts with boot into live image, maybe chroot needed.

Please, re-read my post. Have you tried raising a TTY from the Login Screen ( ctrl+alt+fx ) – not have you tried logging in (to GUI).

Failing that, if using Grub, it’s possible to edit the boot string to allow booting to console. I don’t recall the specifics (it’s too long since I used non-UEFI, let alone legacy Grub), but a little research on this should reveal something.

In any case, without more information from you, it’s increasingly difficult for anyone to do much more than make guesses. The general information you have so far provided is inadequate.

It is possible that your machine is simply too old for use with Manjaro; or that another DE will be more compatible; or that you might even have better luck with another distribution. Good luck. :four_leaf_clover:

Booting from Live ISO would allow use of inxi -Fazy to get system information
Information would be better if manjaro-chroot is able to access installed OS

If this is a new install it may be simpler to reinstall OS

Since this is an older system I would suggest you try minimal ISO with v6.1 LTS kernel to reinstall
and update: manjaro-xfce-23.0.2-minimal-230919-linux61.iso from Manjaro-23.0 uranos released

I don’t have any more info, if i had i wrote.
i tried to use grub to boot into TTY but none worked, i found 2 commands select the Manjaro and press e to go to edit mode and at the end of line starts with linux after quite splash just write 3 or second command after quite splash just write init 3.
none worked for me and everything was the same result

I downloaded the same ISO and installed twice have no files in the computer, just replaced Manjaro as fresh install

If you had posted the output of the command given earlier, that would have been a start. The results of that command can potentially save a lot of wasted time asking about your system.

It was also suggested to boot from your Live ISO to run the commands, as a workaround:

If OS has been reinstalled make a backup or timeshift snapshot and then update using CLI

pamac update

or

sudo pacman -Syu

paying close attention to any messages during update process

Sorry for taking you’r time, i didn’t know what command does and tried to boot into os as your cammand, and run the command from there.
i used live iso and this is the ouotput:

please take my applogoy, somehow i am noob.

I used sudo pacman -Syu for first time and sudo pacman -Syyu for second time, same problem appeared after rebooting.

Thanks. Straight away I see that you mainboard is very old; I had a Z68 in 2010/2011 (It’s certainly not UEFI-capable).

Now if you could also post the output of:

inxi -Fazy

… as requested by @nikgnomic , that should be enough information for someone to take an educated guess or two. Cheers.

Here is the output of inxi -Fazy

Any Idea?

None. Except that using the v6.1 (LTS) kernel would probably better suited to such old hardware than the bleeding edge v6.5 kernel.

@nikgnomic ?

The Idea of using kernel 6.1LTS was awesome working perfectly fine.
i reinstalled Manjaro, enabled Kernel 6.1 (LTS) and everything is working perfectly fine.
Thanks to @soundofthunder and @nikgnomic

Glad it worked out.

Going forward, I’d suggest opting for the LTS kernel every time. Be mindful that there will come a time when even that strategy will fail. Cheers.

I think in that time i have to switch my distro, right?

Switching to a newer computer would be the better option; where possible. That said, there are distributions available offering wider hardware support which might be an option. Don’t expect all the bells and whistles though. :slightly_smiling_face:

inxi data for hardware all looks OK
Updating to “latest” BIOS version F3 might help
GA-M68MT-S2P (rev. 1.0) Support | Motherboard - GIGABYTE Global
But not necessary if system is working with kernel v6.1

LTS kernel v6.1 has projected End Of Life Dec 2026 - Active kernel releases so you should be OK for at least the next 3 years

Latest kernel has been buggy for some users and might work on your system when any bugs or regressions have been patched. If system boots OK on Live ISO it might not need much to get it working on later kernels
