Manjaro Keeps Freezing Temporarily and Randomly

Hello.
Since i updated my system yesterday i keep getting these random freezes that lasts between 4 to 8 seconds e then it comes back.
The freezes don't happen at an exact interval, they happen randomly, but constantly.

I already searched some topics about this issue and some people suggest its a hardware issue.
I made a LiveUSB drive and booted on it, and the issue happens in there as well.
How can i make sure its a hardware issue and how would i find out which piece of hardware is causing it?

The CPU is not overloading when the issue happens
The RAM is not full when it happens, there always lots of space in it
HTOP doenst show me any task that might be doing this (all tasks behave normally and use regular ammounts of CPU power and RAM)
I use a SWAP partition of 8gb (half the computers RAM)

I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion on how to fix this so i dont have to reformat my computer all over again.

Let me know if i can paste some more logs here, i have to idea the issue is so im not sure what the relevant logs might be.

Thanks in avance.

what kind of LiveUSB? is this happening when you boot an older live version that worked before? did you upgrade the kernel no? you say temporarily, what is dmesg saying after that?

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I used a LiveUSB of the same system im using, latest version of Manjaro i3 downloaded from the official site.

Im now sure i upgraded the kernel, i think it did.
I upgraded the whole system like i usually do with: sudo pacman -Syyu
But still i cant say that this was the upgrade itself, since on the day of the upgrade (2 days ago) i still used the system normally. It started when i turned the computer on the next day (yesterday)
Im gonna try an older version now, if i can find an ISO for it.

Im not sure how to use dmesg, but i ran the command and executed the whole log for it bellow:

Thats a very large log, sorry, i didnt know if i should've actually copied the whole thing or grep'd a specific regexp.

One thing i noticed is that in the entire output, the only red error letters that came out was this specific line:
[ 11.742495] iTCO_wdt iTCO_wdt: can't request region for resource [mem 0x00c5fffc-0x00c5ffff], but i don't know what it means, although it seems memory related.

It's a "known issue". You GPU is being reset from time to time.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=111812
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=111970,

Seems to be kernel related. (Hopefully it get's fixed soon).
Until then you could use the current LTS kernel 4.19. (I think that one is not affected)

really? so that is system/kernel related, not hardware?
Now that i looked at the log file for dmesg again i can see the messages about the hangs.

And how can i use another kernel version? Is there a way to downgrade via command or do i have to reformat with an older version?

I looked at the link you provided and couln't find a sugestion for fix.
I also noticed some people complaining it happened sometimes twice a day, but mine are much much more constant (just to illustrate, while i was writing this reply it hanged like 9 times, lasting around 4 to 6 seconds each.

Thanks in advance!

You can install another kernel with the "Manjaro Settings Manager".
Install 4.19, restart and then from grub choose advanced options and boot with 4.19 and then check if it still hangs.

It is fixed!!!!
I installed 4.19.84 as Manjaro Settings Manager recommended, and booted it via Grub like you suggested. Been using it for like 5 hours and not a single freeze so far.

Thank you guys so much @marbangens and @moson. I cant thank you guys enough.

Nice. :+1:

Ouch that's really crazy. I have it maybe once or twice a day so I didn't really bother.
btw. There was just another kernel update in the testing branch.
We'll see how that goes. No freezes so far  I'll let ya know...

I'm not sure if grub remembers the last option you've chosen on manjaro by default (I've been playing around to much in my config  ) If not you might want to change settings until it is fixed (or uninstall 5.3):

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB/Tips_and_tricks#Recall_previous_entry

Grub does remember my last choice, so now the computer is auto booting into 4.19.84 kernel.

Yeah it was really getting unbearable to use the computer. Im so glad everything is back to normal.

Will keep an eye on the updates so i can upgrade the kernel once the issue is fixed.
Thanks again!

Have you had any freezes since?

On the 5.3 kernel, unfortunately yes. I've switched to 5.4 recently, so far no issues there (although I didn't yet use it long enough to be sure it is fixed with that one)

Alright, thanks! I might try to use 4.19 then. I'm having troubles accessing Grub on boot though. Neither sudo grub-editenv - unset menu_auto_hide nor sudo grub-editenv - set menu_show_once=1 works. The computer still boots straight into Manjaro.

But I guess that issue is better suited as its own forum topic...

EDIT: Nvm. I managed to access Grub using the Esc key on startup. Will post later whether the freezing is resolved by using 4.19.

Using 4.19 seems to have resolved the issue for me! Let's hope the problem is fixed in 5.4.

Thank you so much, @moson!

I'm marking @moson's post as solution. In the future you might do that yourself, just use the Solution button of the appropriate post.

I'm using 5.4 for a couple of days now. So far no freeze, so I'm quite confident it is fixed...

Great! I'm guessing you need to be either the OP or a moderator to do that, though. I didn't see any such button.

Oops, you're right. That should have been addressed to @gugutz, I'm sorry.

I've been seeing a lot of these seeming hard to track down video related errors recently, and they even started to plague my long time stable Arch desktop! The worst, though, was my new laptop - it would freeze every minute or two Vivaldi (chromium-based) or Firefox open (as well as other apps that use hardware acceleration) and I would get the standard several second hang up with the rcs0 reset errors, and even sometimes full hard lockups!

To cut to the chase... I solved this problem and have been issue free for a couple of days now with heavy usage by switching from the libva-intel drivers to the intel-media-driver! This didn't work out of the box like the libva-driver, and I had to place a script in /etc/profile.d/ that simply does a couple of exports. Here's my file that I saved as /etc/profile.d/video-accel.sh:

#!/bin/bash
## iHD driver from intel-media-driver
# this seems resolve the rcs0 reset & rectangle artifact issues, as they
# only seemed to occur with the previous libva-intel-driver.
# Reference: [1] https://github.com/intel/media-driver
export LIBVA_DRIVERS_PATH=/lib/dri/
export LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=iHD

## Enable intel-media-driver support in GStreamer
# References:
# [2] https://github.com/intel/media-driver/wiki/Q&A
# [3] https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GStreamer#Hardware_video_accelerati>
export GST_VAAPI_ALL_DRIVERS=1

## VDPAU driver
# Since I installed intel-media-driver 'VDPAU_DRIVER=vdpau' no longer
# worked. I didn't find any documentation on this, but the following
# explicitly defined module seems to work and vdpauinfo provides some
# valid output
export VDPAU_DRIVER=/lib/drm/vdpau_drv_video.so

I tried to be very verbose here and to provide reference links in the file itself, so a year from now I don't forget why I'm using intel-media instead of libva-intel drivers...

I switched to kernel 5.4 with the last Stable update, and have not had any freezing issues since! So both 4.19 and 5.4 work without freezing for me.

Sorry for the delay. Thanks, ill do that on future topics.
