Manjaro KDE won't install from Live USB

Hey Everybody,

I'm new to the forum and also quite new to Manjaro, although I have installed and run it a few times in the past. I keep running into a weird problem, which keeps me from installing Manjaro KDE altogether.
The system boots fine from a live USB and also the installation process lets me go through all the steps, select drive and so on, however when I select install and then also click continue installing after it asks again, nothing happens. The installer just closes and I could start all over again. The live version of Manjaro continues to work however, it's just like nothing happened at all.
I have tried various things, such as trying different hard drives, formatting the drive as well as the live USB, but I keep running into this issue. For a while I thought this was related to the cable connecting the actual SSD, but it is fully functioning in Windows.
My plan is to dual boot Manjaro alongside windows on two different SSDs, but I can't seem to work out why the installation doesn't work for me.
Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated because I have run into a dead end.
Thanks

You're not giving us much information about your system, but I would first and foremost recommend the following...:

  • Disable Secure Boot.
  • Disable Fast Boot.
  • Make sure your SSDs are set to AHCI and not to RAID or something else.
  • Disable BIOS compatibility (alias CSM) and set the firmware to boot in UEFI-only mode.
  • When creating partitions, use a GUID partition table, alias GPT. Your partitions should align to 1-MiB boundaries, and your first partition should be a vfat (FAT32) partition of ~512 MiB, and it should have the boot and esp flags set.

Also, please read the following post below with regard to providing sufficient information in order for us to more adequately answer your questions and assist you.

Okay, sorry, thanks for the quick reply though, I followed your guidelines, unfortunately it still didn't work. I'll try to be as helpful as I can. That would be my system information. I still suspect some hardware issue of some sort.

I ran the dmesg command as recommended in the guide you posted below, and it gave me this message:
dmesg: read kernel buffer failed: Operation not permitted

I'm happy to give you more information on the issue, but I'm unsure as to what might be helpful.

your are booting on USB witch choice EFI
but your disks are in MBR

not forget
in use of EFI , disk have to be in GPT
in case of Legacy , only in MBR ( non secure non CSM )

if you see on Bios your USB stick
< USB vendor name > --> boot for MBR
< USB vendor name >< parition 1 > --> boot for EFI

Okay thanks for the advice, I will have a look.

So I tried that, and unfortunately, it lead to the same result as before.
I created a bootable DVD as a result, but that also didn't work out. Attached is some hardware information regarding the DVD attempt.

So I came across a post in the Russian Manjaro forum, where somebody has a similar issue to mine. I'll link the post down here.

@eugen-b suggested to this user to try again and post the content of sudo -E calamares -d here, which is what follows down here.

Maybe someone will be able to assist with this because the end of this terminal output is where the problem seems to be.

No, that is not correct. You can use either MBR or GPT with either UEFI or BIOS, although there are some caveats...

  • BIOS with GPT requires an unformatted placeholder partition of type BIOS and about 2 to 5 MiB in size as the first partition in the table, or else GRUB will write its core.img into any regular partition you create there, potentially damaging said partition's data structures.

  • UEFI with MBR requires an EFI system partition of ~512 MiB in size with the boot flag set, and with a vfat (FAT32) filesystem on it.

  • Not all UEFI implementations support MBR, but the UEFI specification does demand that they would.

that many users should avoid as how many had installed this without any errors or asking help on theses forums

each time that we check GPT disks & UEFI or not , this NOT THE CASE
see @gohlip , @AgentS posts and i

Well no matter which way I tried to set up partitions etc. this doesn´t seem to be the problem. I have installed Manjaro before on a similar laptop using the same USB stick on the same hard drive, and it worked "out of the box". The error output I am getting seems to have something to do with the graphics card and drivers, but I have no idea how to solve this.

Newbie Corner is not for such cases.

@MatthiasH, on this forum I think only @philm knows enough about Calamares code. It would be extremely appreciated if you you took time to file a bug report at

Check first whether there is a current bug report for a case similar to yours.
If not create one, give a link to this topic, post the clamares terminal output in a friendly format and let's hope they catch the error and fix it.

You maybe right. Your nvidia card is Kepler Fermi, so default nvidia driver conflicts. You need nvidia-390.
You may only boot to the free drivers, install and when booted to your installation, you may switch to nonfree. Mhwd will know and select 390, if you use the auto option (gui or cli).
If there are difficulties on this method, post your story.
You should be prepared, so this 8s very useful to read before.

I haven't got the faintest idea what you're talking about. #newbies is not for what cases, and why are you telling me that? I didn't park this thread here. :open_mouth:

It's about this

It's definitely not to be mentioned that you can install UEFI on MBR disks. We may discuss how/if it is possible in a new topic (for experts? :sunglasses:).

@eugen-b: The upstream bug-tracker might help, but in this case it is more or less a driver problem on our end.

Can you elaborate so I can explain the Russian guy, please?

I mean, an advanced user can install anything on anything. But for newbies the rule is MBR <-> Legacy and GPT <-> UEFI. I wasn't criticizing you personally, sorry, if it came accross like that. :worried:
