I got an Asus Laptop with an AMD CPU and a Nvidia GPU and a second screen of Asus.
Xrandr detects the second screen as connected but the second screen does not butch.
I remember getting this to work in the past but I forgot the steps.

As an extra note. Im sure it has something to do with having a NVIDIA hard and a GPU inside the CPU as well and then HDMI output is confused by that.

seems that you have to use the nvidia-gpu to use the external connector because the external connection is hardwired to your nvidia card. please post the output of

glxinfo | grep server

if glxinfo isn’t avaiable install “mesa-utils” from the package-manager

server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4
server glx extensions:

you opened system settings → display and checked for the displays ? there is this drop-down-menu to switch between displays.

Yes, I have the display configuration and both screens show, but the outside monitor remains black, even if I make it the main monitor.

you pinned the option-button “active” for the second display ?

Yes I did

wayland or x11 ? you have to be on x11, whats the output of

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

output is x11

please just to check that your physical connection is okay:
please download the actual plasma-manjaro, create a live-usb/cd and boot into this live system (keep the display on while booting). does the second display work with the live system ?

You did not say whether your HDMI is connected via USB. In that case, maybe you can resolve the issue similar to this; where a particular USB hardware was affected by the kernel usb autosuspend:

HTH

I recall topics where users were confused that dual monitor worked with Windows but not with Linux.

It turned out to be that Windows drivers was able to use both outputs - Linux not.

Other cases were different - as I recall - the internal display was switched off when external monitor was plugged in - others again were USB3/Thunderbolt displays which did not behave as expected.

I had a similar issue where the system - apparently - was not able to handle a 5K monitor on one output and FHD monitor on a second output.

Using a 144Hz display port cable made the display avaiable - but then refresh rates had to be set at 60Hz - but then the 5K monitor got distorted. I ended up using only the 5K monitor which with my GPU could be at 120Hz though the monitor was 240Hz.

A new GPU made the 5k monitor go up to 240Hz.

So - you see there is a forest like load of possible causes and possible solutions - it is next to impossible to hit the sweet spot for your system.

From the driver package version it appears are on stable branch.

Nvidia 535.x is in unstable and testing - perhaps the next stable snap will provide a solution.

Checked, tried other cable and tried with other laptop, worked fine with other laptop, not with mine

No, hdmi to hdmi

I had it working in the past. I edited some kind of config to fix it back then or added a flag somewhere etc, but dont remember exactly what I did to make it work. Recently, I unplugged during runtime, worked somewhere else, came back, replugged, stopped working.

sorry, but editing EDID files is nothing you should do unless you really know what specific aim it is. once broken, it’s broken.
instead of fiddeling without exactly knowing is a bad manner. did you ever tried the tip to check a live-iso instead of editing files to malicious ?

Dont have a USB stick to try a live-iso =(

Edit: Back then I had found some solution online, applied it and made it work. I cant find it anymore unfortunately. So I just didnt run around editing it. It broke when I unplugged the screen while the laptop was running.

Tried with USB launched and it didnt work either. Tried with plasma, will try with XFCE

Edit: Doesnt work with XFCE either.
Edit: Funny thing, when I unplug the cable it still detects the screen in xrandr. I have to restart for the disconnect.

Update: Tried with other Monitor & other Cable, same issue.
