Can't boot into 5.9.11-3. Nvidia package dependancy errors

Hi,

I updated via package manager a couple of weeks ago and it updated from 5.8.18-1 to 5.9.11-3. I did a reboot after updating and the OS wouldn’t boot, screen just stayed black.

I realised this morning that there were alternative kernels I could boot from and I managed to boot into 5.8.18-1 without issue. I noticed in package manager that a new kernel update was available, so tried running the update in the hope that it would work. However it’s giving some nvidia package dependency errors. This is the error:

#############################################
Failed to Prepare Transaction

could not satisfy dependencies:

  • removing linux58-nvidia-440xx breaks dependency ‘linux58-nvidia-440xx’ required by linux-latest-nvidia-440xx,
  • if possible, remove linux-latest-nvidia-440xx and retry
    #############################################

Not sure how to proceed?

Thanks All,
Sunny

can you return

inxi -Fza --no-host
sudo mhwd-kernel -li
sudo mhwd -li
sudo ls /etc/mkinitcpio.d/*.preset
sudo ls /usr/lib/modules/

Hi Stephane,

Apologies for taking ages to reply, linux is my secondary boot device and I rarely use it (but will be changing this!)

Thanks for your help!!!
Sunny

The 5.7, 5.8, and 5.9 kernels have reached their end-of-life. You should install 5.4 or 5.10, reboot into the newly installed kernel, then remove the end-of-life kernels. After that you should be able to install the NVIDIA drivers with the auto installer.

Ah gotcha. Thanks Probrn.

I cannot ‘update’ via package manager to 5.10, so I guess I need to downgrade. Do you know how I can do that? I’m running 5.8 at the moment

Thanks
S

What do you mean you cannot? sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux510 shows an error?

Actually that command didn’t error (but i don’t get option to install 5.10 from package manager)

Is it safe to chose Y to install this?

I have got a timeshift backup from october 2020 which I could use potentially to roll back to. But I’ve not used timeshift before to rollback a boot drive like that, so not sure if it’s safe to do so. I’m assuming that that was the last time the system was working properly, so upgrading from that point may work

Is it worth a shot?

Say yes to proceed.

Looks like it worked but there is a small warnings at the end and it’s asking if I should continue with a full system upgrade, okay to proceed?
