Manjaro KDE (17.0)

#21

I just tried again by using the ‘button’ on the Manjaro Hello and it started but failed with same failed to format error for the / drive. It did format the /boot from the previous attempt.
Please reboot livecd.
Would it be OK to just do it now w/o reboot?
Setup to get desktop usable is a PITA due to the windows all being offscreen.

{edit
Assuming it is OK, am installing the dev version:
Packages (7) calamares-3.1.0-3 [removal] manjaro-efi-utils-20170307-1 manjaro-live-base-20170307-2 manjaro-live-skel-20170307-2 manjaro-live-systemd-20170307-2 manjaro-tools-base-0.14.6-1 calamares-dev-3.1.0.r3093.6bb046fa-2
}

#22

If

cat /etc/mtab

in live session shows any mounts in /tmp/calamares-some_id/

Then you either need to manually unmount them all, or reboot.
Sometimes calamares doesn’t unmount if it failed for some reason, so second start will crash partitioning, since stuff is still mounted and it can’t be formatted whatever.

#23

There are no mounts in /tmp except for tmpfs

[manjaro@manjaro ~]$ cat /etc/mtab|grep /tmp
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs rw,nosuid,nodev 0 0
[manjaro@manjaro ~]$
[manjaro@manjaro ~]$ cat /etc/mtab|grep cala
[manjaro@manjaro ~]$

It (calamares-dev) segfaulted on the first run:

You find on the left hand bottom corner a button to open debug window.
Can you please try to capture a screenshot of the first tab?

Also some inxi info would help.

Well did not see the reply until after started and completed the attempt but I did get these snapshots and the output of calamares -d.

Install failed; same error. (same pic as in previous post)
calamares -d:

Got any ideas on why it won’t format the same partiton space that it formatted just a day ago with the KDE-rc3 calamares installer?
It is odd. It did format the /boot on the first attempt but it won’t do the / space.
KDE Partition Mgr agrees that /boot is formatted and the rest of the space for that partition is unallocated:

:?:

#26

I believe your dos filesystem table is borked, or partitons are somehow misaligned.

You shouldn’t have /dev/sde4 at the beginning, its primary partition, right?

Did you move at some point the entire ntfs partitions to create unallocated free space at the beginning?

You shouldn’t have /dev/sde4 at the beginning, its primary partition, right?
Numbers mean very little in linux.
The partition is the first and primary …Ah-ha! …wait.

i know why it fails.
One can only have 4 primary with MBR. The 4th is the Extended partition.
I had ext4 + windOS ‘SYSRESVD’ + windOS + extended as the primary partitions.
Now am trying to make the ext4 into two partitions and Calamares wants to make both as primary but it cannot.

It prbly should not have allowed me to select the unallocated to format as ext4 since it is supposed to be smarter than me,.
I’m glad it is smart enuf not to bork the rest of the partition table. WindOS is a pain but sometimes necessary for sanity checks. I’d rather not lose it just yet.

Did you move at some point the entire ntfs partitions to create unallocated free space at the beginning?
Nope …well, sort-of: I installed Manjaro first then windOS however, I did delete and reformat the Manjaro that was 50GB to make it 49.5GB and add the SYSRESVD for windOS because MS did not make one during the initial install(yet it demands having it). That’s prbly where the renumbering occured.

Of course that does not explain the segfaults at startup.

Looks really nice! Kudos to devs!

The display screen is still the wrong one.
It is creating a virtual desktop and making the empty display(right side) the screen that is displayed:

All windows open on the inaccessible screen. All panels are placed on that screen also.
The SDDM login apparently has the same issue as there was no keyboard or mouse action visible. I blindly typed the password with no echo in the password box and it accepted it.

I could not find the mouse pointer on the desktop until I right-clicked; the pointer then appeared.

Can you guys set the default for KDE “Display” to not enable all the connections that it thinks are displays  I.e., only enable the “Primary” display so it won’t dump us into screen/area that cannot be used.

That will work for everybody. Those relatively few that have multiple monitors can arrange the displays and enable those that they need,(which they probably do anyway). Those with only one display and connection do not have to do anything since that is the default for them anyway.

Thank you, KDE of Manjaro is really really nice, KDE has Lots of customization, THANKS

Hi @Alpha, it seems to be an issue with some configurations. See also here. I’m glad you made it after all.

#31

Please send us your config files you may find in the KDE folder in your home-dir. We will take a look on them and may add adjustments to our default config if needed.

@neognomic

You cud do the following to preserve existing partition structure with Windows Partitions intact and still install Manjaro. Linux does not necessarily need primary partition to install / run.

Note: I am referring to following Partition Table snapshot from ur earlier post on this thread.
https://postimg.cc/image/9r8ch6kcf/

 1. Delete /dev/sde4. Now Unallocated space wud increase to approx 49.5 GB
 2. Select Unallocated space and create new extended partition which shud be named as /dev/sde4 by Disk partitioning utility.
 3. Now create desired number of logical partitions and proceed with installation.

To me it happens to me exactly the same and also I was left the black screen. I had to turn off the laptop by pressing the button. It did not respond to anything.

#34

Can you confirm the 17.0 iso’s have the updated mhwd-db as there seem to be a lot of threads with nvidia not working.

@philm

#35

Thanks so much for the effort! It’s a good idea and one I did consider. I have several Linux installed to extended partition so is not new for me but decided to just KISS and make one ext4.

Please send us your config files …
OK, I can do that!
You mean the fixed KDE 17.0 configs, correct
And, pardon my ignorance, but ‘send’ the ~/.config where
…or do y’all want some specific files? I confess that I do not know where systemsettings5 stores the display config information(more ignorance). …

And, again, thanks for all you and the other devs in Manjaro Team do to make this available to us!

I run Jack. Is there any advantage or great difference for me in running RT scheduling or selecting a realtime kernal?

#39

Seems like cups is broken again tho :frowning:

I cannot connect to to my printer again.
Arch does it again, sigh.

Back to linux mint as i cannot even be bothered to fix it this time

I just remember how much of a pain in the ass to fix my printer the last time and dont feel like it.

#40

You’d be the perfect guy to test this out for us, since you run jack and most of us don’t. Are you noticing issues that you think a realtime kernel might fix, video editing delays, sound issues, etc?

Using Manjaro Settings Manager swapping kernels is easy to do AND UNDO.

#41

I run i3 and followed this tutorial (How to replace Pulseaudio with Jack, Jack and PulseAudio Together as Friend) and can say that I now have the best audio quality on any linux distro. I don’t do any video.

On the basis of “if it aint broke don’t fix it” I can’t help fixing it and see what happens
