I predict this is because of the fact the nvidia drivers weren’t prepared for the new kernel. Any tips on how to debug? I would also like to just revert kernel if possible, I have access to the command line but don’t know the commands. Also google -> Manjaro is broken for some reason, is that just me?
p.s. lightdm fails
So it seems you have installed a new kernel but not the extramodules like matching Nvidia drivers? Normally a install via pamac or mhwd will add those extramodules when found from an older kernel. pacman simply doesn’t have that feature.
So list any package you may have installed and install the needed for your new kernel:
pacman -Q | grep nvidia
Google didn’t noticed that we have a new forum. It takes months until they pick up the change and move to archived.forum.manjaro.org. So if you search via google, you may add archived. before forum to get a valid result.

when I try to install using mhwd it doesn’t work saying it’s already installed. would a messd up .bashrc file make this happen? I tried to mess with it which may have been a mistake. p.s. lightdm is what’s not starting, any way to see a more verbose readout?

linux58-nvidia-440xx is installed but you say that lightdm doesn’t start. So I assume that linux414 and linux57 work on your end. Based on your mhwd output you have three graphic cards, which is odd. So which card is working for you?

We simply have to know why the drivers can’t be loaded. However I also don’t read any issues regarding 440 driver series on our stable branch announcement yet, as you already have the latest packages installed as shown by branch-compare.

I’ll try resetting the original .conf file
that WAS the solution 
so in short, the following command line code solved the issue:
$ sudo nvidia-xconfig
I had previously done some stupid stuff without backing up…
