Manjaro hangs and sometimes shows red and white checkered square

Hi all,

I have been having some problems since reinstalling Manjaro 5.15.

There are five blue dots that appear immediately before the OS runs (although this may be for the splash page).

Often my Manjaro hangs. But recently I am seeing a square of red and white (it almost looks like a scan code for a phone) that takes over the screen and everything freezes.

I think it may be a problem with Nvidia.

[manupc@manupc-2 ~]$

I’m hoping someone can help me get my Manjaro running smoothly again.

Thank you.

What does this mean?
Maybe kernel 5.15?

Correct.

Hi guys,

I really hope someone can help me with my problem. Since first posting, I have updated to kernel 6.1. Today, however, a large red and white square again covered the YouTube video I was watching and everything froze. Sometimes the mouse freezes and the whole PC hangs.

Previously an expert on this forum helped me with a similar problem by identifying an issue with the ibt parameter, which is now off.

I will resubmit specifics of my PC but because I am a novice i don’t know what else i should be submitting to provide more details. I suspect it is a Nvidia issue.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you in advance. Perhaps it is an issue of updating the Nvidia drivers. I just don’t know.

you’re using the open-source nouveau driver and nvidia doesn’t support your card anymore. sadly but nvidia expects users to buy new hardware that they can feed their shareholders.
even the 390-series of the still avaiable drivers don’t support your card.
the 380-series of nvidia-drivers was the last generation that supported your card.
is there a special reason that you have to use this card (yes a passive one with a good power-consumption ratio) ? is a more modern card an option ? if so think about amd or intel but hands off from nvidia.

p.s.: maybe a used one ? amd’s rx 480 or 500-series ?

Hi Olli,

Thank you for the input.

The PC is quite new, only about a year old and although I didn’t buy it myself, should have proprietary drivers. I thought it was all quite modern. I will now investigate getting a more modern card. Unfortunately I don’t have a used one. I will have to make a plan.

Thank you.

that’s what i already wondered about. board and cpu are actual but the graphics-card is really outdated. such passive cards are nowadays only used in server-systems where passive cooling and small powerconsumption is the factor but no graphical power is needed.

Thanks Olli.

It seems so strange. I will have to find out more about the graphics card.

Thank you again.

Ok, so the graphics card should be a Geforce GT 730 2GB Dedicated DirectX 12 Graphics Card - Included.

Is there some other command i can track this with?

you can check “nvidia linux drivers”. this will guide you to the official nvidia sites where the driver versions are shown in detail. you can check the driver-version and which cards are provided.

Sorry, I meant to say the Geforce GT 730 is meant to be installed on my system. Is there a way i can check for it on my system other than mhwd -l -li? I feel something is missing here.

it’s already in the inxi-command. you can try to install the 470-series. it’s shown up as alternative but i wonder because the official nvidia site claims that it is not included in the supported cards.

The first operating system of my PC was Windows. I had to format and install Manjaro. I understand that the graphics card is a piece of hardware so OS shouldn’t make difference, but have i maybe missed a step in the change from Windows to Linux that my graphics card needed?

yes, there is the option to use propietary drivers at the beginning of the install. you have to choose this, otherwise the open-source driver is used.

What if I were to do a complete reinstall now and make sure i select the option to use proprietary drivers?

learning by doing. if this is a new install and you don’t have to loose important datas, why not ? i would give it a try.

Thank you so much, Olli. For all your input. I will try do a complete reinstall and perhaps it will fix these issues. I should say I have just done a reinstall but maybe i didn’t properly select proprietary drivers.

it’s straight at the beginning where you choose language settings etc… straight the first boot-menu before you start booting linux.

Hi Olli

For some reason, in proceeding to reinstall I cannot get past the boot menu. I select Uefi SanDisk (Partition 1) , which is the only option for my live USB and which has always worked. The boot menu just doesn’t respond. It looks like it is going to do something when I select the option but simply re-displays.

I have decided to download the latest xfce iso and make a new bootable usb. If there is an easier alternative, please let me know.

If I am making really beginner mistakes, please be patient.

Thank you.

I am using the same GPU with nVidia legacy driver v 470

  Device-1: NVIDIA GK208B [GeForce GT 730] driver: nvidia v: 470.199.02
  Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 21.1.8 driver: X: loaded: nvidia gpu: nvidia
    resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz

And nVidia website confirms that this GPU has legacy driver support up to v470.xx
What's a legacy driver? | NVIDIA

Or use Manjaro Settings Manager > Other Hardware GUI

Thank you, nikgnomic.

The fact that you have the same GPU and proprietary driver and yours works just fine is great news for me! It means it is still supported.

The problems i have been having include hanging of the whole system, freezing of the mouse and keyboard, and a large white and red square (looks a bit like a scan code on a phone) when watching Youtube sometimes.

I have obviously been using the open source drivers until now. I hope that after installing the v470 legacy driver all these problems will be solved.

I have decided not reinstall with the latest manjaro version but have simply installed the v470m driver on my existing system.

Thank you for your assistance.
