Manjaro (Gnome) 18.0 - random boot problems (Dell Inspiron 15-5559 and Crucial MX500 SSD)

you need to provide more info

Most probably you have been mixing boot modes during either installations. On UEFI setup you select bootloader place with /boot/efi mount. No sense of target of bootloader then.
On MSDOS/MBR you select target for bootloader, so the question for /boot/efi shows you booted in UEFI. Then you “think” you are on MSDOS but probably wrong.

No, I didn’t mix up anything. I clearly have a UEFI setup using gpt and a FAT32-boot/efi-partition.

I tried to do an installation using an MSDOS/MBR partition table, but it didn’t work at all. Calamares didn’t let me choose a target for the bootloader installation (the option was simply missing), and before the summary that is displayed immediately before you start installing, a warning prompt told me I needed a boot/efi-partition. Which is, if I understand correctly, only needed for a GPT/UEFI setup, isn’t it? So it’s kind of weird if you ask me.

Also the boot process does work from time to time. It’s just completely random

Please provide the info provided by @dglt. If you do, we will be able to tell what maybe wrong.

the manjaro iso has 2 partitions
1 for boot Bios , 2nd for boot EFI ( you see a number part in this case )

you have to check version Bios and option Bios , calamares OFFERS ONLY FROM BOOT LAUNCH
( Bios or EFI )

@deesnook, if you are installed/booted in uefi/gpt (and I think you are), let’s just make you are in the first place.
When you’re booted (when lucky), at terminal,

sudo parted -l
findmnt -s
efibootmgr

And after affirming you are in uefi/gpt, let’s fix the grub thingy. I understand you have gone through the several iterations made with grub and now you are in v 2.03.2-1. That’s good.
But we need to fix it and a grub-install is still necessary (undo the systemd-fsck if it was done too).
You can proceed with below if you are very sure you have uefi/gpt and all is in place. You can wait to confirm gpt/uefi is in place before proceeding if you like.

If gpt/uefi and fstab all correct, do the following…(refer step 7 here)

In /etc/default/grub, make sure you have one of the following specified.
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=countdown

Also in /etc/default/grub, make sure you have
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5 (or more; suggest 10, change to 5 later on when you feel more confident)

    At terminal,

sudo rm /boot/grub/grubenv
sudo grub-editenv /boot/grub/grubenv create
sudo grub-editenv - set boot_success=0
sudo grub-install
sudo update-grub

More explanation …
You need GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE= because 00_header has
if [ x$feature_timeout_style = xy ] ; then
set timeout_style=${style}
set timeout=${timeout}
and 01_menu_auto_hide has similar “if [ x$feature_timeout_style = xy ] ; then” as well.

By specifying it (and with boot_success) in /etc/default/grub, it’s the same effect as a ‘stock’ grub and avoids the needless complications of the fedora-grub.

And don’t forget to do a ‘grub-install’.

You just said it yourself. As I said(or I thought so) , you can’t install a UEFI system on MBR disk. Even if you boot in UEFI mode. This is a restriction for UEFI! ! Not the installer 's…

It’s how it works, it is normal.

In order to install an MSDOS /MBR system you need to boot in MSDOS. That’s why Manjaro media are called hybrid. They can be used for both, but you NEED to boot to the proper mode. Or repartition your disk to GPT.
Please, have some time reading about UEFI, just to make sure we are not advising wrong.

If you need anything else let me know

Thanks, I did the steps you recommended.

This is the output it get with sudo parted -l:

Modell: ATA CT1000MX500SSD1 (scsi)
Festplatte /dev/sda: 1000GB
Sektorgröße (logisch/physisch): 512B/4096B

 2 316MB 105GB 105GB ext4
 1 105GB 1000GB 895GB ext4

so I’m pretty sure I’m booted in UEFI/GPT.

The output for findmnt -s is:

The output for efibootmgr is.

In /etc/default/grub the setting was GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu

I’m now going to reboot, let’s see if it works…thanks a lot so far!

OK, so I rebooted a couple of times. The first five times the boot process still got hung right after

[OK] started TLP system startup/shutdown

The sixth time it worked without any further output shown, after the aforementioned line Manjaro went directly to the login screen.

The grub menu, however, now shows every time I boot

I finally get what you’re driving at. Booting in MSDOS refers to the bootup of the live system I want to install from. I thought you were referring to booting up the installed MSDOS/MBR system from the SSD. That’s why I was confused, sorry about that.

So to clear things up, what I did was:

  • boot the live system from USB drive in UEFI mode and install a UEFI/GPT system --> installation worked, except for the boot problems I encountered

  • boot the live system from USB drive in UEFI mode and try to install an MSDOS/MBR system --> this didn’t work (as expected) for the reasons you mentioned

What I haven’t tried so far is booting the live system from USB drive in MSDOS/MBR/BIOS/legacy mode and installing an MSDOS/MBR system

Good. The grub thingy is not an issue now.
But do not go trying to boot in bios-legacy or change into msdos.
That will mess things further.

Now, as to tlp issue. there can be several causes.
A quick search will show some have resolved it by using another kernel and some need to fix the graphic drivers.

I personally do not have this issue at any time and if some here suggest some things for you, it is better to listen to them than from me.

But, to troubleshoot, first try to boot to prompt [1], if that is not a problem, most likely it is a graphic issue.

To boot to prompt, manually add a
3’ (no apostrophe) to linux line of grub entry.
Log in with password.
As said, if it boots to prompt, fix the graphic driver.
But first update/upgrade (pacman -Syyuu).
I personally fix graphic issues by first removing all installed drivers, then let mhwd install the correct driver.

mhwd -li
sudo mhwd -r pci <all installed>
sudo pacman -Syu
sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300 (or nonfree)
sudo pacman -Syu

If you have hybrid/dual graphic cards (primus/bumblebee…), tell us and some expert (not me) will help out.

If is is not a graphic driver issue, try another kernel.
Good luck. That’s all I can do here. Take care.

this should be boot, esp flags ( required after add mountpoints on install )
can you change with USB install key & Gparted ?

Indeed it should be, and that is how I set it on install. I don’t know why it changed. I corrected it using GParted from the live system, but it didn’t help…thanks nonetheless!

What is your current problem after all?
Have you followed @gohlip advice?

Same problem like before (random bootup hangs). I’m now trying to follow @gohlip 's advice fixing the graphic issues.

Following @stephane’s advice I also noticed that the partition order is reversed. I had set up the boot/efi partition as sda1, the root partition as sda2 and the home partition as sda3. Now it’s just the other way round. Home is sda1, root sda2 and boot/efi sda3 (?!?!?)

You cannot permanently set the partition name. That’s why we use UUID to specify partitions.

About your issue, random failures are not bootloader related normally. That’s why you should look for video drivers setup as advised, getting relevant system info and logs.

I followed the steps, but to no avail. Same random bootups, this time it worked the seventh time I tried.

I have two graphics cards, one integrated Intel chipset (HD graphics 520) and one dedicated card (AMD Radeon R5 M335, the chipset supposedly is Sun XT). In the Manjaro settings, it shows the video-linux drivers installed for both cards. Should I maybe change something there?

Looks the same to me. The kernels used are identical too (4.19.2-1). However, with the system on my old HDD no such boot problems occur.

right now are you able to boot into a graphical desktop or are you tty only?

It’s random. Roughly 1 out of 6-7 times booting into the graphical desktop works. The rest of the times it’s stuck after

[OK] started TLP system startup/shutdown

or it just shows a black screen after the first “page” of output of the boot process has run through. Sometimes it’s a black screen with a blinking cursor
