Manjaro freezes consistently

There is nothing in the logs at the time of the freezes. Mouse freezes and everything on the screen is frozen. Keyboard is also not responsive if I try to turn on caps lock or num lock. I don’t know what to do anymore.

  • I tired every possible kernel 3.10-4.10 from manjaro settings manager
  • video-catalyst and video-ati graphic drivers
    Always same result. What could I possible do to get to the root of the problem. This is making my machine unusable as I never know when the freeze will happen again. It happens normally after 24 hours but on some kernels even faster in just a few hours uptime. Please help :cry:

I’d try running a memory test to see if a RAM sector is damaged.

I tried that and it run for hours with no errors at all.

Some questions:

  1. Do you get freezes while on console or just using Xorg/Wayland?

  2. What is your hardware? Go to this topic, do as suggested, post your output there, then a post a link here.

  3. What DE/WM and session manager do you use?

  4. What is the output of cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old | grep EE after you reboot from a freeze?

  5. What is the output of journalctl -xq -b -1 -p 3 after you reboot from a freeze?

  6. Do you use a compositor? If so, try turning it off.

  7. Do you suspend/hibernate and resume successfully?

  8. Can you lock/unlock your screen or launch a screen-saver/DMPS-Off/On successfully?

These are a lot of questions, but they can help narrowing the problem.

  1. I never tired running just console for more than what I needed to fix something so only on xorg

  2. suspend turns off the hardrives but I can still hear the fans going on? is this normal? hibernate seems to work fine both modes resume successfully

I don’t see anything definitely crucial. The outputs should come from a boot after a freeze.

I’d check your motherboard BIOS and set everything to default/auto (except auto OC). Then retest to see if it happens again.

I’d also like to see the output of mhwd-gpu and glxinfo | grep rendering && glxinfo | grep glx

No it isn’t. Try suspending, then resuming, then getting the outputs of cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE and journalctl -xq -p 3

  1. Have you tried any other DE/WM?

  2. Does it freeze when running from live ISO?

Maybe incompatible memory!

YES, i had this also… --but-- bought good Kingston RAM but my board crashed between minutes and hours without anything…

So check your compatiliby list of your motherboard and buy RAM who is tested by the manufactor!

That’s possible. His motherboard also has a BIOS option to power down the RAM. Maybe that could be the issue??

In the morning there was a different type of crash. I could not run any new application or reboot or anything. Keyboard was still responding and mouse too but it just did not respond to my actions. I will try with default settings in bios.

I have a spear ram kit but it’s only 2gb but it might be good for testing. Will try that as well.

EDIT: I also wanted to ask what is recommended set of action at the time of the crash? how do I reset the system safely? Is there anything I can try to unfreeze if my keyboard is responding? something that will reset the gpu/xorg or something else to unfreeze?

I still don’t see anything critical. You should try setting your BIOS to defaults and using your old RAM to clear that doubt.

You can usually restart X with CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE, but it won’t help if xorg isn’t listening keyboard inputs. To reset, you can try to change to a different tty (in ex.: CTRL+ALT+F2), login and then shutdown sudo shutdown now. If you can’t change tty, wait until the HDD isn’t busy and shut it down through the power button.

I’m running out of ideas! It seems like something related with your BIOS or the ACPI. It’s important you test the machine in console mode, so we can attribute the problem exclusively to the graphical environment or not.

Tried using the default bios settings (ram running at 533) for the kit I have right now 800 is default and it still froze the system. Tomorrow I will try with different ram and if that does not work I will try the console mode.

EDIT:
Just a small update it’s almost been 3 days and no freeze running on the other 2gb ram kit. I guess ram is a problem even if there are no errors running memory test on the other 4gb ram kit. I cannot use 2gb kit as it’s too small for my tasks so I will have to order a new 4gb ddr3 stick as this cpu+motherboard support running this kind of configuration. I was really hoping It was not the ram because I just bought that 2x2gb ddr2 ram and I was hoping that would be the end of spending any money on current outdated configuration but I really need functional machine so I have no choice but to spent more money on a new ram once again.
Thanks again to everyone for helping me and let this be a lesson to me to never trust memory or any other test as they all lie :sob:
