I’m about to build a new computer, and I want to to run it exclusively on Linux, and I’ve been recommended Manjaro by a friend, but for this I need to boot it from a USB Drive, and I was wondering how big a drive I need for this
Not sure if i understand correctly: you just want to install manjaro normally on the hard disk/ssd?
In that case pretty much any usb will do, the image file is about 5gb. Take 16GB, to be future proof. Install Ventoy on it first and just drop the iso there. And do not forget to check the checksum of the iso after that.
Note that manjaro as an arch based rolling distro is not ideal for absolute beginners.
If you want to install on a usb and run forever from there (and not just to test), that is a more complicated procedure. Possible, but not supported out of the box and not beginner friendly.
A manjaro iso is 4-5 GiB size, so a 16 GiB is fine for insatallation. Smaller ones are hard to find nowadays.

Well, the most recent ISO is about 5.3 GiB in size. We also recommend that you would use ventoy for putting it on the USB stick.
It’s very easy to use, and more user-friendly than any other method. With ventoy, you format the drive, and it will create a special Ventoy folder on it, in which you can simply drag & drop as many ISOs as the stick can hold. Upon booting up, you will then get a menu from which you can choose which ISO to boot.
You can find ventoy here (
), but once you’ve installed Manjaro, ventoy is also available from the Manjaro repository.
Be sure to disable legacy BIOS boot, Secure Boot and Fast Boot in the UEFI settings of your computer. ![]()
This is true. Please take the time to read this short essay below… ![]()
In addition to this, as a new member, you may want to subscribe to notifications for the Announcements > Stable Updates category. Every bundled update, whether it’s for Manjaro Testing or Manjaro Stable, always comes accompanied by a dedicated announcement thread.
-
The first post of the thread contains the changes with regard to the previous bundled update.
-
The second post of the thread details the potential problems, and how to deal with them.
-
The announcement thread also always contains a poll (in the first post), and a summary of past issues (in the second post), for those who’ve skipped an update — which is not advised with a rolling-release distribution, but it does happen.
