im very new to linux, I’ve installed manjaro 5 times in the last 2 days just because of this issue. I can’t boot up after the nvidia update.
If things are complicated just guide me how to setup a fresh driver after installing manjaro. I tried to install the propitiatory version but after installing that doesn’t boot either. please help :slight_smile:

EDIT: editing the modules solved the whole issue thanks to brahma.

add ibt parameter, that should help with not being able to boot:
open this file:
kate /etc/default/grub
and in this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT inside the quotes add this parameter:
ibt=off
dont remove anything from there!, just add it to existing parameters, save the file, update grub:
sudo update-grub
reboot and test

1 Like

and It isn’t booting, stuck at black screen.
I gave you everything I did sir :slight_smile: . I hope I can be saved.
and no the “ctrl+alt+(f1,f2,f3,f4)” doesn’t work.

okay. So I reinstalled manjaro (for the 6th time) :slight_smile:

did these accordingly:

sudo pacman -Syu
sudo pacman -Syuu

then mhwd -l -d

mhwd -l -d                                                                            ✔  13s 

ok, you have a amd+nvidia, so the ibt should not be needed for you…
theres no need to reinstall manjaro…
first check if:
fast boot is disabled in bios - you may not have this option;
fast startup disabled in windows, if you are dual booting;
AHCI enabled in bios - if you are on RAID, and you are dual booting with windows, dont switch to AHCI, otherwise you will not be able to boot into windows…

now can you boot into manjaro live usb with the proprietary drivers?
in the manjaro live usb, connect to internet and chroot:
manjaro-chroot -a
and provide logs:
journalctl -b-1 -p4 --no-pager
and output from:
mhwd -l -li

How to check the AHCI and RAID thing?

That’ll be somewhere, it depends on your motherboard manufacturer where, in your BIOS/UEFI.

okay, I’ll go step by step. Sorry for being annoying, as you can see I’m totally new in these. so here’s the breakdown from step one.

Fastboot is disabled in bios.
Fast startup is disabled from windows settings.
I checked “IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers” through “Windows+X > IDE ATA/ATAPI” and it says "Standard SATA AHCI Controller "

And I can always boot into a live USB with the proprietary Drivers but after finishing installation and after restart the system doesn’t boot, stays on black screen

the RAID/AHCI is in bios/uefi under SATA options…
so now boot into manjaro usb, and run this command:
inxi -R
just to be sure you are not on raid…
then continue with the rest of the commands: chroot, logs, mhwd - as outlined above

Booted using my USB
then I did the following

inxi -R:

inxi -R
RAID:
  Message: No RAID data found.

manjaro-chroot -a:

manjaro-chroot -a
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdb1. Check your device.map.
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdb1. Check your device.map.
==> Mounting (ManjaroLinux) [/dev/nvme0n1p5]
 --> mount: [/mnt]
 --> mount: [/mnt/boot/efi]
 --> mount: [/mnt/home]

I don’t know about those first 2lines but if you ask then I used the 100mb fat32 storage and mounted that as boot/efi or something like that. As most of the partitioning videos I saw followed the same steps

journalctl -b-1 -p4 --no-pager output

that’s all. Thanks for being so much helpful though

from the logs, the nvidia is not being even loaded, there is not a single log related to nvidia, but there should be some logs…
post output from:

Thanks

looks ok…
did you booted the usb with the propritary drivers? if yes, open new terminal window, and from this non chrooted terminal, post output from:
inxi -xG

I booted from the Open source as it was installed at first. Cuz Proprietary install wont even boot. I install then after reboot Im on the black screen.
I’ll boot into proprietary live usb then I’ll give you the logs again. Give me 2 mins.

Thanks

I booted using proprietary drivers from the USB

i wanted output only from this:
inxi -xG
and do it from a non chrooted terminal, i want to check if the nvidia is loaded in the live usb

sorry. I updated the comment. Live booted using proprietary and rechecked everything. And I’ve updated everything there.

ok, the nvidia is loaded … very interesting…
so from the chrooted terminal, install the 5.15 kernel:
mhwd-kernel -i linux515
when done, enable early loading:
nano /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
and edit the MODULES section to look like this:

MODULES=(amdgpu nvidia nvidia_drm nvidia_uvm nvidia_modeset)

save it with ctrl+x press Y, and update it:
mkinitcpio -P
exit chroot:
exit
reboot and in the grub menu - advanced options select the 5.15 kernel (not the fallback one), and boot with it and see if you can

Edited that file to this:

# vim:set ft=sh
# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
#     MODULES=(usbhid xhci_hcd)
MODULES=(i915 nvidia nvidia_drm nvidia_uvm nvidia_modeset)

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=()

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=""

# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No RAID, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
#    HOOKS=(base)
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS=(base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems fsck)
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
##   No autodetection is done.
# HOOKS=(base udev modconf block filesystems fsck)
#
## This setup assembles a mdadm array with an encrypted root file system.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm_udev' for more information on RAID devices.

I’m being extra cautious sorry for that. I’ll reboot and let you know ASAP

Idk what just happened I just rebooted. Didn’t change kernals and everything’s working
What just happened?In the settings it says Im running 6.1.1-1 and I have 5.15 installed

so you forgot to change the kernel as instructed above, but that doesnt matter, since everything is working now… the issue was that the nvidia were not properly loaded, and enabling the early loading (editing the modules section) fixed it…
just to be sure if the nvidia is loaded post output from:
inxi -xG

GRUB is gone :slight_smile: I reboot it shows “asus” logo then blinks and comes to lockscreen of manjaro
