Manjaro does not boot looks like whatever is inside boot partition is not installed

I have been playing around with installing different filesystems ext4,btrfs,xfs to figure out which one is the fastes for my sistuation with file transferes and, live video and audio recordings at the same time and so on.

after not having being able to figur out compleatley how to use subvolumes on external drives with btrfs, I decided I wanted to reinstall ext4 xfce manjaro, but I wanted the minimal version so I used architect.
(this error happens nomather what filesystem or the calamari installer I try to use exept btrfs on luks encryption)

everything looks to be installed properly until I go into gparted to have a look, then the boot partition tells me I have 512MiB avaliable but under the " used and unused" section it gives me a - saying nothing has been installed I guess.

the grub boot loader seems to work because I can choose if I want to boot into manjaro or windows or bios. (manjaro and windows is on 2 seperate nvme gen4 drives) but when I select manjaro
it gives me the common 1.55 through 10.55 No irq handler for vector message

plus this
/dev/nvme0n1p2: clean 254141/6553600 files. 2122888/26214488 blocks

after that it looks like it’s going to boot into manjarobut the screen just stays black with a normal flashing (_) and it stays like that until I force reboot the computer with the hardware button.

I have search other threds here on the forum but non of them seems to mee to have this exact problem.

Any help would be greatly apprechiated!

If I use th architect installer and try to install minimal manjaro without Luks encryption should the should the crypttab file have anything in it when I go to check it before I compleat the install?

Can you list a step by step of what you did to get to your current setup / system?

I’m trying to follow along, but it’s not clear if you’re using LUKS + BTRFS, or EXT4.

But the step by steps would be better to help troubleshoot.

@winnie

right now I have reinstalled Manjaro minimal with BTRFS and LUKS encrytption just because I konw that worked. and I have gotten Jack2 with Ardour to work proplerly.

but I have been trying to reinstall Manjaro (minimal) without LUKS encryption and with both EXT4 and XFS files system. From the architect installer I have also tried installing EXT4 Manjaro full with just the originale XFCE installer ande wipe disk letting the installer do everything, and I have tried to manual partitioning the drive and assiging XFS files as well through the XFCE installer.

Everything looks to be going right with the XFCE and Architect installers. I like to check gparted before doing the reboot and it shows that nothing was installed on the boot partition.

when I reboot, I get the grub bootloader where I can choose Manjaro, Windows, UEFI Setup When I choose Manjaro the screen goes black for as second then I get the

1.55 through 10.55 No irq handler for vector message

after a split second this message shows up onder ^^^ this one.

/dev/nvme0n1p2: clean 254141/6553600 files. 2122888/26214488 blocks

Then the screen goes black again (like it does before it shows the Manjaro loginscreen) but it stays black and never shows the loginscreen or anything, I have to press the physical reboot button on my tower.

as a side note, I know both installers work, because I have a Gen3 Adata nmve drive on the board as well that I have installed Manjaro on with both architect and XFCE installer just to make sure the installers was not corrupted somehow.

I’m suspecting maybe the LUKS encryption has something to do with it, but I cannot prove it, lol. because bot installers worked fine before the first time I installed Manjaro minimal with BTRFS and LUKS ecrtyption on the Sabrent Rocket plus dirve.

I made sure I have formatted the drive compleatly with minitools partition wizzard and I initialized it with ntfs just as a good measure before I got to install Manjaro with either installer as well.

The reason I want to go back to EXT4 and XFS is that I want to measure their transfere speeds with my own test file setup that is in my workload, becuase I don’t think the phoronix-test-suite is realy reperesentative of real life, It told me that I got transefer speeds of upwards of 5000MiBs on EXT4 and XFS but on BTRFS I only got a little over 300MiBs and when I tested on my own folder with a stop watch BTRFS is actually almost 10 seconds quicker on the same file. I wanted to try this test again without the encryption on EXT4 and XFS to make sure that that’s not killing the performance (it should not) I like to double check. I would stick with BTRFS if I could figur out how to use it properly and take full advantage of it.

I hope that clarifies it a little more.

What’s odd is that doing a full installation where you wipe the disk still doesn’t allow you to boot into Manajro. Previously using LUKS is irrelevant at that point since it’s a fresh installation.

Are you able to chroot into the installed system via a live USB? Maybe there is a misconfiguration of the boot files?

As a side note, it’s hard to benchmark file systems, since you need to consider cache and sync’s, and even that file managers will not honestly show you the true transfer speeds, let alone honestly tell you when a transfer is complete. (It could still be in the buffer, while it tells you “100% done”).

can you report
from USB iso manjaro

UPDATE: I can chroot into the system, and the EFI folder under boot is empty. Any idea what to do next?

That’s what I thought too. I used htop and timed the time it has the processor active along with the file manager info. I really want to love btrfs but I can t figure out how to use it properly when it comes to subvolumes and external drives so I figured It’s best to go back to old school file system.
I will try to reinstall and see if i can chroot into it, and let you know.

any advice?

I guess I can just stay on btrfs and learn how to use it properly. lol but I really don’t like not knowing why something is not working the way it’s supposed to I’ll take all the help I can if you have any ideas.

Me neither… but it really difficult to say anything and even to follow your process. Honestly you write a lot of blabla (no offense) and provide tiny information.

What you have done step by step would be more useful.

Btw… we have no glass globes, even if someone write it. :stuck_out_tongue:

This could be more helpful

sudo parted -l
sudo blkid
cat /etc/fstab
sudo btrfs filesystem show
sudo btrfs subvolume list /path/to/mountpoint

Like @megavolt said, and no disrespect at all (I know how confusing installations and boot loaders can be), but right now it’s hard to follow along since we’re not really sure how you installed Manjaro, step by step.

Like the above example, it sounds as if you’re referring to two different PCs? I can’t tell if you mean that “right now” you have a working system that you installed Manjaro with BTRFS + LUKS.

As for an empty EFI directory, you made no mention of mounting it before/after chroot’ing?

none taken I thought I had done step by step. I’m gong to post my best attempt below here in a fresh comment of my step by step process. and I hope that is more step by step.

I really wish y’all had glass globes. lol

none taken I’m just happy y’all even bother to try to help!

I meant, when I was writing that post I had reinstalled Manjaro minimal with architect with BTRFS and Luks because that works for some reason, and I find it odd that that would work when none of the other methods seems to work.

I’ll try and clarify it a little more.

  1. it’s the same PC only one. with the architect installer I can install Manjaro minimal with BTRFS and Luke encryption on the same nvme0n1 drive. and it works like expected.

  2. If I try to use architect to install Manjaro minimal with either EXT4 or XFS on the same nvme0n1 drive it stops after the grub boot-loader appears on the monitor after the initial reboot.

  3. If I use the XFCE Manjaro installer on the same nvme0n1 drive with full wipe and letting the installer do everything. It stops after the grub boot-loader appears on the monitor after the initial reboot.

This is my attempted to make a detailed step by step of what I’m doing.
@megavolt when I try to split mine up like you did, it looks wired so I’m putting them all under one backtick

Manjaro XFCE installation

1. downloaded the XFCE Manjaro ISO from manjaro.org

2. made a bootable usb with rufus

3. rebooted the computer into the live Manjaro ISO USB

4. followed the installer and chose wipe drive alternative for partitioning. (no encryption)

5. after installation says it's done, checked the box for restart/reboot and clicked Done.

6. when rebooting I press F11 to get into my boot order and choose Manjaro (Sabrent rocket plus nvme0n1)

7. Grub boot-loader shows up for a second, then the screen goes black for a second

8. irc handler message shows up 1.55 through 10.55, screen goes black again after a second

9. instead of showing me the Manjaro welcome screen the monitor stays black and nothing happens.

10.booting into live USB ISO again.

11. opening terminal, make myself a super user (su)

  3. its seems that video is not working , possible to open TTY ( Ctrl+Alt+F2 to F7 )

a) are you using 2 monitors ?
b) we should see errors in journalctl & Xorg , this is possible by chroot
from USB iso manjaro

sudo manjaro-chroot -a ( if filessystem is not btrfs )
journalctl -b -1 -g amdgpu ( -b0 current boot , -b -1 boot before , etc ... )

@stephane I’m only using 1 monitor.

I’m downloading ventoy now, is the option noapic on the ventoy instalation or is it a plugin/other file I need to download?

I have not tried TTY, will do this and report back.

I will try the chroot commands you posted and report back, on a new post asap. thank you.

In general this could a problem related to the gpu driver.

First thing: remove quiet from the kernel parameter: Kernel parameters - ArchWiki

Is there anything what failed at the boot process?

If the display-manager failed, then it has something to do with the configs of xorg in most cases.

Since you use a AMD GCN5 gpu, it is built into the kernel. Maybe there is some quirk… the display manager does not wait for the gpu or such things…

I bet there is something at /var/log/Xorg.0.log … That lists all logs at once:

 for x in /var/log/Xorg*; do echo -e "\n--- $x ---\n$(cat $x)"; done

If you can switch to another TTY, then try restart the display manager there:

sudo systemctl restart display-manager

That helps!

It loads the old radeon driver and not the amdgpu driver for what ever reason…

But here it has loaded the amdgpu driver:

You will need to add the modules to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf. Add there on the correct place:

MODULES=(amdgpu radeon)

This way it forces linux to load the amdgpu driver first as early as possible.
Then:

sudo mkinitcpio -P

EDIT: LOL posted at the same time xD

This is the output from < for x in /var/log/Xorg*; do echo -e “\n— $x —\n$(cat $x)”; done >

There is no other indications on the monitor about what failed during the boot process, or anything else.

I’m gonna read up on this and hopefully do it and then report back to you.^^

going to try this now. and report back^^
