About the device: PinePhone:
Perhaps you’re in a line of work where security is a must, or a hard-core Linux enthusiast, or perhaps you’ve just got enough of Android and iOS and you’re ready for something else – the PinePhone may be the next Phone for you. Powered by the same Quad-Core ARM Cortex A53 64-Bit SOC used in our popular PINE A64 Single Board Computer, the PinePhone runs mainline Linux as well as anything else you’ll get it to run.
The purpose of the PinePhone isn’t only to deliver a functioning Linux phone to end-users, but also to actively create a market for such a device, as well as to support existing and well established Linux-on-Phone projects. All major Linux Phone-oriented projects, as well as other FOSS OS’, are represented on the PinePhone and developers work together on our platform to bring support this this community driven device.
It seems as though I’m able to receive text messages, but I can’t seem to open the thread for a given text to see it’s full content. I also am having problems making calls (I didn’t in the alphas), where I continuously get ‘Call Failure’.
Update: I can open text threads in which I initiated the text, but receiving a text I can’t seem to open within the chats app. I also can’t receive photos via text.
Same here.
This build feels rather unusable, to be frank.
Localisation doesn’t work (after selecting my native language and rebooting, the interface is still in English)
WiFi seems to be very unstable
The vibrator just goes off for no reason and doesn’t stop.
Hard to conceive of the PP being shipped with a build where the keyboard doesn’t work, really. I thought Mobian was quite rough around the edges, but a build without working text input? How could this pass testing? Yes, I know that this is a volunteer effort and I don’t want to sound like a complaining customer but still, this seems like such a basic flaw that should be spotted immediately. Why wasn’t it?
There is a firmware update for the modem, which may improve call audio or, if you are very unlucky and somethingGoesWrong™, break the modem… (you have been warned).
@zash1958 ,@jro check if the phone is in Docked or Unlocked mode from the notification bar. This one got me confused for awhile there - for whatever reason it defaulted to Docked and the on-screen keyboard was never showing
The numpad in the phone application seems to only be able to input numbers. Long-pressing 0 produces just 0, not a +. I also cannot input # either. So I cannot call/type any international extension number, like +421…
Another issue seems to be, that while I have 4G connectivity when not in a phone call, during the phone call, the signal reception seems to always automatically switch to 2G. Maybe a similar problem as described here: adamlabay net/2020/07/03/update-consistently-successful-calls-on-pinephone-with-ubports?
