Manjaro 21.1.0 Pahvo released!

Nope, It’s because we’ve noticed it too late when the artist already was busy.

OK, thanx

A bit off-topic, but not every 8 bit IPS monitor are same: there are many 6 bit + FRC (Frame rate control - Wikipedia) and there are not many true 8 bit w/o FRC.

10 bit monitors are also not the same: 10 true bits or 10 = 8 true + 2 bit via FRC.

The only website to check it I know is displayspecifications.com but and there there is the note: The information on this website is provided on "as is, as available basis" without warranty of any kind....
So that info couldn’t be 100% guarantee also, but could be a one of start point to check a monitor model on.
So if you have 8 bit via 6 bit + FRC , and only 72% NTSC (or by sRGB sacle it is about 97%) color space usage it is not a very HQ monitor, it is very typical 10 years old IPS display technology.
Even current TFT TN tech much differ from how is was looks like the same TFT TN but 15 years ago, for example in aspect of currently wider color space usage.

@alven : My current (still)monitor will be replaced next year by another one that has 14 bits (8 bit + LUT), so this is nothing new for me - but thanks for the explanation

Too bad that Gnome does not come with Wayland, as in Fedora and although it is well optimized, Gnome-shell has a very high consumption compared to Fedora, but I loved the terminal

I installed new ISO build manjaro-kde-21.1-stable-staging-210816-linux513.iso having stable-staging branch settings.
BTRFS+LUKS was chosen (all operations via GUI installer and auto-partitioning used)).
Switched to unstable branch and updated it.

I found that saved log which I wanted to report: may be it can be helpful for someone developer.
It is very first / initial update after clean ISO installation.

Pacman's log key excerpt:

E: ERROR: can't list qgroups: quotas not enabled

E: btrfs returned an error: 256

After that error during initial update I see no more problems in several further updates.

And in the [Solved] Btrfs error 256 on Setup Assistant - Garuda Installer Images - Garuda Linux Forum topic it mentioned like sort of “normal error”. Does he right or wrong I do not know, but the error survived at least from that Jan 'till Aug: 7 months.

I did a new install of Manjaro Gnome 21.1 Pahvo.
There was one issue I would like to see fixed:
After installation, the touchegg service is not enabled by default, which causes that the gestures are not working in the x11 session.

For the rest, I really like how the team made gnome 40 this polished.
Thanks for the hard work!

There is the issue of dolphin that can not open the terminal by pressing Shift+ F4, because the package kinit is missing.

Here is the solution:

Basically kinit is not a dependency anymore of Dolphin, nor an optional dependency.

Now that Manjaro has better support for btrfs with 21.1, is this problem any closer to being solved?

Possible junks/orphans in every KDE image incl. preview and unstable builds

If to compare them, than it is able to see that minimal ISO lacks some packages which present in ordinary/typical/full ISO. As expected.

But unexpectedly we can see that the

xdg-desktop-portal-gtk 1.8.0-1
gnome-keyring 1:40.0-1
gnome-desktop 1:40.3-1

packages are present in minimal KDE ISO, and the same time they lacks in full-featured ISO.

Does these gtk, gnome packages are required for KDE and lacks in full ISO? :upside_down_face:

Also there are other gnome in KDE both ISO (minimal and full):

gnome-icon-theme 3.12.0-6
gnome-icon-theme-symbolic 3.12.0-6
gnome-themes-extra 3.28-2
libgnomekbd 3.26.1+2+g8d02ebd-2
I made a fresh installation from the `manjaro-kde-21.1-stable-staging-210816-linux513.iso.zip` image

and have no “Required by” for all except the libgnomekbd (and xapp is req. by timeshift), (but currently I’m on unstable branch):

Possibly all mentioned packages except libgnomekbd are junks for all KDE ISO images.

A post was split to a new topic: I encounter two issues with the Manjaro 21.1.0 KDE minimal version

@philm talked about this in Destination Linux yesterday evening (missed it live however it will be uploaded on Tuesday or Wednesday this week to their Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWJUSpXVHTaHErtGWC5qPlQ

thanks for the update Awesome work!

Are there any docs or any package that I need to install to get the auto btrfs backups working on an existing environment? I checked the hooks but haven’t seen anything threre

I installed manjaro the arch way some time ago with btrfs and I would like to align my backups to the distro option offered.

Episode with @philm uploaded now

Before this release I used snapper but decided to try timeshift instead as it was chosen as default. It seems to work OK and match the behavior of Pahvo (tried in VM) so I believe the steps you need are:

  1. Install timeshift, grub-btrfs and manjaro version of timeshift-autosnap
pamac install timeshift grub-btrfs timeshift-autosnap-manjaro
  1. Start timeshift and click through the wizard, be sure to use btrfs-mode (should be selected automatically)

That should get you to the point where Pahvo is with respect to packages. Now if you haven’t done so previously you might want to separate /var/log and /var/cache into separate subvolumes to exclude them from the snapshots (Pahvo have separate subvolumes for /, /home, /var/log and /var/cache).

In addition, I noticed that when creating snapshots manually with timeshift, these are not added to the boot-menu directly as one needs to update the grub boot entry configs. To do so automatically, modify the grub-btrfs.path service as described in GitHub - Antynea/grub-btrfs: Include btrfs snapshots at boot options. (Grub menu)

Hope this helps
