Manjaro 21.0 Ornara released!

Unbenannt

We are happy to publish our latest stable release 21.0 we named Ornara.

Our last release Nibia was from January and a lot of things changed between those releases. For once, we dropped Gnome Initial Setup routine from our ISOs. It was nice to try out, but the feedback overall was not so great. Since we also have optional OEM ISOs for our manufacturers, we see no need to further investigate into GIS.

Gnome edition got exciting new features: GNOME 3.38 replaces the previously split Frequent and All apps views with a single customizable and consistent view that allows you to reorder apps and organize them into custom folders. Simply click and drag to move apps around. Settings can now manage parental controls for Standard user accounts through the new Parental Controls option in the Users section. GNOME Shell can now drive multiple monitors with different refresh rates, making sure that you get the best possible experience out of your desktop. Under the covers, the screen recording infrastructure in GNOME Shell has been improved to take advantage of PipeWire and kernel APIs to reduce resource consumption and improve responsiveness.

Our KDE edition is all about upgrading the looks and usability of Plasma. Find, reach and run your apps faster and easier than ever with Plasma’s new app launcher. The new launcher features two panes to make it simple to locate your programs and comes with improved keyboard, mouse, and touch input, boosting accessibility across the board. Plasma System Monitor is a brand new app for monitoring system resources. KDE is pushing to have first class support for Wayland, and Plasma 5.21 makes massive progress towards reaching that goal. A new page to System Settings got added: the Plasma Firewall settings. This configuration module lets you set up and configure a firewall for your system. The Media Player widget’s layout has been improved and now includes the list of applications currently playing music in the header as a tab bar. Another upgrade is that the album cover now takes up the whole width of the widget.

With our XFCE edition, we have now Xfce 4.16. The window manager received lots of updates and improvements again in the area of compositing and GLX. Support for fractional scaling was added to the display dialog, along with highlighting the preferred mode of a display with an asterisk and adding aspect ratios next to resolutions. The settings manager has improved search and filter capabilities. Thunar file manager received a boatload of fixes and quite a few notable features, including pause for copy/move operations, support for queued file transfer, remembering view settings per directory and support for transparency in Gtk themes.

Kernel 5.10 LTS is used for this release, such as the latest drivers available to date. With 5.4 LTS-Kernel minimal-ISOs we offer additional support for older hardware.

Last, but not least, our installer Calamares also received many improvements. Among other things, Calamares has now a table of ‘best guess’ languages for each country and when GeoIP is enabled, it will automatically select that country’s language as default – the user can of course pick a different one. The ‘best guess’ is based on Unicode / ISO data, which is sometimes dubious. Calamares also ships now a table of ‘best guess’ keyboard mappings, allowing native language input. However, usernames and passwords should be in US-ASCII (this is a limitation of the login system – some parts of the system will support non-ASCII input, but it’s better safe than sorry).

We hope you enjoy this release and let us know what you think of Ornara.

Nice :-)

@Strit, Is the kde firewall Available on ARM ?

@philm
The readme on the sourceforge pages for all 3 editions state they come with 5.11 LTS kernel. That should be 5.10.

It’s in the repo, but not on the images. Yet. :stuck_out_tongue:
You can install plasma-firewall and either firewalld, ufw or netstat as a backend.

So is it official final release iso or release review iso?

& Until osdn upload speed is fixed, sourceforge is the new place for isos??

this is the official final release iso

Yeah!.. Many thanks in advance!..

Permit me just a little suggestion for future iterations, if technically possible, of course: Now that both the Architect installer needed to be (at least temporary) ditched and that there are problems on the isos storage front, and last but not the least, that maintaining such a huge number of both Official and Community flavors alike (to let alone testing and unstable branches!..) would certainly require so much work (and obviously you deserve your rest and family time as everyone else to compensate for the superb job you provide us!); wouldn’t it to be possible to provide a single image with something really lightweight like Openbox or a “middle the road” sort of thing like MATE Desktop and tweak the Calamares Installer to add a Desktop page and let us to have the ability to chose whatever else fancies us the most from the list to install the same way we actually do for the Office suite? That way we go from those myriad of images to just 1 to 4 images to maintain. You could for example retain the Official Images and add a 4th one for the full list of DE’s available, or you could go centralized installation one? Either way, a win-win solution, me thinks, because the ones whom are interested on “minority” DE’s already know how they work, look and feel, so no need to actually have a live system with it!.. Unique caveat, perhaps is that it might to be mandatory to install Openbox or whatever else came in with the centralized installer… Oh, well… Or not?..

Have a nice day!..

Does this release happen to contain the Navy Flounder firmware?

I have been doing a fair bit of buildiso tinkering this week to make a live session that will boot with my 6700 XT.

Any reason why no torrents were made available this time?

Grub is not completely silent anymore(file system check is showing)…had to add ‘console=tty3’ to gurb to make it completely silent. Manjaro Grub theme is not enabled by default, had to enable it manually. Otherwise everything else is fine…I used the Minimal Gnome Linux510 iso.

Seems to be the case for all editions.

Was reported with the rc1 release already, but I guess it got lost because it was split into it’s own thread :man_shrugging:

Just a note: The sourceforge page still directs users to OSDN (in the summary)

I would like to update a perfectly fine working Manjaro 20.0 release, how does one do this without performing a complete reinstall with the new release?

The numbers are misleading. Manjaro is a rolling release. Just update through the package manager

sudo pacman -Syu

Manjaro is a rolling release. If you have done all the updates since you first installed it, then you’re technically at the most recent release!.. Release numbers are just meant for those ones whom need a new iso install. For example: I have currently the 20.x one, but if I want to install it on a new machine, better to download the newer one and install from there. Otherwise I’ll have a long (and potentially not so good) package update process after installation. Have a nice day!..

So where can one find the signatures?

I am relatively new to Manjaro and have just registered to the forums here after taking about a month or so to kick this distro around the block for awhile.

Exciting changes here. I am thoroughly enjoying my experience and to be honest, it is easily one of the best Linux experiences I have had in recent years. Stuff just works. Optimus. Audio. Bluetooth. It all just works.

I go from a cold boot to a usable desktop in under 20 seconds. Even Fedora failed to boot that fast on my machine.

Keep up the good work!

And until today no one knows why :man_shrugging: I’ve reported this to get this fixed and not to let it get lost in it’s own splitted thread
