Manjano Kernel > 6.1 cannot be installed when connecting a TV or Monitor via HDMI (only VGA works)

I can’t install Manjaro manjaro-kde-24.0.7-240821-linux69.iso from USB flash drive.
After the line “Starting Show Plymouth Boot Screen…” there is no signal on TV via cable HDMI.
I tried connecting the PC to two TVs with 1080p and 2060p.

I recorded USB via SUSE Studio Imagewriter and Ventoy.
I tried editing the GRUB by removing the “quiet” and “splash”, but that didn’t solve the problem.

The TV only has HDMI connectors, there are no useful settings on the TV.
I tried connecting the HDMI cable to all three, ARC and regular connectors.

Install using only the default monitor.
Fix your multiple monitor setup later.

Good day!
It is possible to connect a regular monitor to solve the problem at once, but this is not the right solution, it does not eliminate the Manjaro error:

  1. Installation of earlier versions of Manjaro was performed correctly on the same PC and with the same TV.
  2. Using a monitor with HDMI also causes a problem even after installing Manjaro. And not all monitors and PCs have a VGA connector. These are just the problems I encountered: 1. topic, 2. topic, 3. topic
  3. It is not always possible to connect a monitor, Manjaro is often used as a home media center with a connection to TV.
  4. To check the functionality of the PC and TV on which the problem with installing Manjaro arose, I installed Download - Bodhi Linux. Bodhi Linux successfully loaded in Live mode and installed itself, replacing Manjaro.

Maybe it’s worth filing an issue?
This HDMI connection issue is over 2.5 years old. I encountered it for the first time since early 2022.

Maybe these are all different problems, but they were not there before. It seems to me that these problems with HDMI appeared with the transition to the new kernel version 6.

I note that in the 2.5 y/o thread you referenced, Manjaro was also installed using only one monitor – reducing the complexity – this is the logical way to achieve the result.

Likewise, in this case, using one monitor to perform the installation of Manjaro makes sense – despite the apparent inconvenience; despite other considerations.

Solve your other issues after Manjaro is installed.

I have seen many threads with similar multiple monitor difficulty, and resolutions seem far ranging. In some cases a new cable may fix an issue; I understand that display port connectors are also considered more reliable.

In some cases a configuration change may help; and those changes are dependent on the hardware in question. Monitor/TV technologies are constantly changing; in some cases a setting changed on the device itself has proven to be a solution.

Again, and in every case, these issues have been solved after successfully installing Manjaro. Another distribution may work out-of-the-box for your specific hardware configuration, or, it may not.

I do not use a multiple monitor configuration, I can’t offer anything beyond that which I have also read in the forums. As I follow those topics (I intend using multiple monitors at a future time), I have noticed that some have immediate success, while others seem to struggle greatly.

However, as you can actually install Manjaro, albeit with only one monitor connected, I suggest a change in the thread title to reflect your actual problem – that your TV/Monitor cannot yet receive signal.

Best regards.

Additionally, please download the latest full Manjaro ISO, to maximise the possibility of success. Cheers.

No complaints against you personally!

I’ll just explain, a PC with HDMI and a TV with HDMI only.
In this particular situation, there is no monitor physically.
To check, another TV and another HDMI cable were connected.

I just don’t quite understand, now PCs and monitors with HDMI are rare on sale. And no one needs them (with HDMI).
The cheapest monitor already has HDMI.
TVs almost never have other video connectors except HDMI.

Previously, to install an operating system for a friend, you had to take a dozen CDs with software with you.

A new reality has arrived, now you need to carry a VGA monitor with you and a VGA cable.

Probably a hasty joke, laughing at myself!)

Found an old usb flash drive with Manjaro.
In live mode the system loaded perfectly.

Using the latest ISO (21 August 2024) in Live mode, try booting with proprietary drivers, and see what difference that makes, if any.

Initially I tried the latest version from August 21, 24.
I always downloaded the image from the main page.

Just downloaded: 6.1, 6.6, 6.9
manjaro-kde-24.0.8-minimal-240908-linux61.iso
manjaro-kde-24.0.8-minimal-240908-linux66.iso

And
manjaro-kde-24.0.7-240821-linux69.iso

The main page of Manjaro offers the version with kernel 6.9.

Trying to boot in order:
6.1 boots normally with open source drivers.
6.6. after the inscription “Starting Show Plymouth Boot Screen…” an animation of three dots is displayed against the background of the motherboard boot screen and after a second: “No signal…
6.9. after the inscription “Starting Show Plymouth Boot Screen…” an animation of three dots is displayed against a black background and after a second: “No signal.
Tried with open source and proprietary drivers.

The second possible solution to the problem (except for connecting a VGA monitor) is clear.
It is not clear whether I need a kernel higher than 6.1?

Or install 6.1 and forget about the problem.
And if necessary, download the ISO image not from the main Manjaro page but from Sourceforge.net

Kernel 6.9 has reached EOL, apparently.

This would be your better workaround.

Kernel 6.1.x (and 6.6.x) are both LTS kernels – generally the most stable fallbacks – so, if kernel 6.1.x solves your issue, then this is the obvious choice for the time being.

Later, as kernels are continually released, try a new one from time to time to see if the situation has changed.

A link for reference;

Cheers.

Edit:- I’s also suggest always downloading the full ISO when possible, as the Minimal ISOs will not contain everything you might expect to be installed by default.
