MacBook Air won't turn on without USB Wifi inserted?

#1

Recently I installed Manjaro Gnome on my MacBook air and used a USB wifi device for installation and then post install I install “linux420-broadcom-wl” for Wifi (I’m using the newest kernel) and when I rebooted my Macbook would not boot without the USB wifi device inserted instead sitting on a black screen (I suspect towards the end of the system powering on), chrooting into the system and removing the drivers presents the same results, as does reinstalling

Any ideas about how to potentially fix this?

#2

can you please goback with kernel 4.19

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux419

reboot and press Esc to choose in Grub’s Detail choice

#3

If 4.19 is no better, then install 4.18.

If neither of those work, install kernel 4.14.Always use Manjaro Settings Manger to install kernels, and always keep 2 kernels installed.

Also, which version of the wl driver do you have installed. Did you install the driver from an outside source such as the AUR.

The external adapter you are referring to, what is the model, and which chip is it using. What driver did you install for the USB adapter. Is it another Broadcom adapter. I’m assuming your internal adapter is a Broadcom adapter.

Please post the outputs of these commands:

lsmod | sort
journalctl -b -1 --no-pager | grep wl | tail -n 30
dmesg | grep wl | tail -n 30
lsusb | grep -i 'wl\|adapter'
lspci -knnvvv | grep -i net
inxi -Fxxxz
grep -r "blacklist\|install\|options" /etc/modprobe.d/

Please post the input/outputs of all requested commands via the terminal as text, (not as pics).

Information on how to properly post hardware specs and logs:

Please format any terminal output with three backticks before and after, as shown in this picture:

I also neglected to mention that I tried the kernel that ships with Manjaro and 4.14 to no success, I installed the broadcom drivers from Manjaros repo

Then, it may not be this driver issue.
Please get info from a failed boot.

I see you have the wl driver installed for kernel 4.20 as well. The wl driver has been reported broken for some adapters on 4.19. Kernel 4.20 is reported working with the broadcom wl driver. Was there any improvement with kernel 4.20. What is the state of your Broadcom adapter on the different kernels. Under 4.14 your Broadcom adapter is reported as “up”. Is the internal Broadcom adapter working properly on all kernels?

Can your wifi adapter be disabled in bios. I assume you have no LAN connection that is disabled in bios.

I’m not sure how exactly to approach straightening out this issue because I’m not sure what’s causing it. One suggestion I might make is to install the kernel headers for each kernel you have installed. Example: linux420-headers linux419-headers linux414-headers.

As I stated I’m not exactly sure how to correct this at this point, but I may have an idea about an alternate method to correct this.

Assuming your Broadcom adapter is functioning with the wl driver installed, a reinstall may be the easiest method to bypass creation of this situation in the first place. If you save the broadcom-wl driver and any associated dependencies to a thumbdrive you should be able to manually install the wl driver with pacman without a working internet connection. If you never install with the USB adapter connected then this issue should not be created in the first place.

While that is not a fix, it may be the easiest workaround to this problem. I will do my best to see if I can figure out what is causing this, but that may not be so simple. The reinstall would certainly save a lot of frustrating troubleshooting effort.
