Mabox Linux 17.02 - Manjaro re-spin with Openbox is ready

#41

@napcok, thank you very much for an excellent Manjaro Respin!

I successfully installed the 17.02 iso and updated the install to the latest software on two separate hardware systems - an Dell Inspiron 660 desktop, and an HP-11 Streambook - with very little difficulty. I ran into one very minor snag during the update process which was quickly solved by searching the manjaro forums.

Keep up the great work on this excellent version of Manjaro!

#42

I’m still a bit hazy on the distinction between a window manager and a desktop environment. If Mabox is Openbox with a pre-installed suite of apps, doesn’t that make it a DE?

#43

The distinction becomes blurred at some point, but I’d say that including applications with a window manager is not enough to make it into a de if the combination doesn’t have other characteristics of de.

#44

A wonderful mix of two of my favoite distros. I’ve been using Manjaro since it’s inception and was a long time #! user. I really like the post install scripts for various software and the great theme options. Hope this one sticks around and keep up the great work!

#45

Any cool Mabox wallpapers out there? That green cube has design potential.

#46

You can find some not-very-cool Mabox wallpapers here -> https://pl.maboxlinux.org/forums/topic/tapety/

I will try to create some cool wallpapers for upcoming version.

#47

@napcok, I’ve been having problems updating packages from the mabox repo the last few weeks. Error message is that your repo keys are corrupted. I’ve followed the manjaro wiki instructions to clear and reinstall the keys many times (on 3 different days) but the mabox keys continually throw up the corruption message. I’ve also refreshed and reset pacman mirror list quite a few times but it doesn’t help. Because of that I didn’t update my mabox VM at all these last few weeks.

The other standard manjaro repos are fine and today I used pamac just to update the packages from those repos since only 3 updates came from the mabox repo.

Is that repo still in use? I noticed the pacman package is from the mabox repo and not from the standard manjaro repos. That means I haven’t updated pacman in mabox for some time.

#48

Been using Mabox for three days now, and having a few hassles:

  1. No Xorg updates will install due to conflicts
  2. Mabox doesn’t detect the volume and brightness F-keys like regular Manjaro does
  3. Menu > Settings > Pointing devices doesn’t open anything, and I assume that’s where tap-to-click and scrolling direction are changed.
  4. Tabs in Pale Moon often close on left click, regardless of where the pointer is on the tab. Also closes pinned tabs.
  5. Generally slow. Apps often take 20-30 seconds to open from first click

Any tips for improving performance?

#49

You can safely delete the offending file if you immediately run the full system update.

#50

So delete the conflicting file first? That won’t break Xorg and the display?

#51

@wongs you can try these wonderful pacman/keys/mirror fixing commands:

  1. delete pacman db:

sudo rm -r /var/lib/pacman/sync/core.db

  1. restore pacman db:

sudo pacman -Syy

If the issues are still with keys, do this:

sudo rm -r /etc/pacman.d/gnupg
sudo pacman -Sy gnupg archlinux-keyring manjaro-keyring
sudo pacman-key --init
sudo pacman-key --populate archlinux manjaro
sudo pacman-key --refresh-keys
sudo pacman -Sc
sudo pacman -Syu

If mirros are still a problem, at this moment it’s good to try again:

sudo pacman-mirrors -g

All of those should clean and restore correct files as databases, mirrors, keys.

#52

No - it won’t - I have done it twice - of course if you don’t plan to run a full system update immediatly then you should not delete it.

#53

This is some old bug. The file is listed as belonging to xorg but in reality it’s created by mhwd if I recall correctly and is no longer needed. You can safely remove the problematic file and then update system.

#54

Hmm. I’m getting libglx.so: Unable to trash file /lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so: Permission denied”.

Going through command line it says Xorg is not a directory.

#55

use

sudo rm -f /lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so

#56

Success! Thank you so much.

And I learned a bit more CLI.

#57

Then it’s a different problem I had in mind. This one is described here and the fix is to delete with force, like suggested above:

#58

@michaldybczak, thanks for the input, but those were the commands I tried, with no success.

The developer @napcok contacted me via PM (very quick response, thanks!), and it’s through his message that I finally discovered the problem, which is that mabox OS has an additional keyring, ie the mabox-keyring.

The wiki instructions for keyrings were all for pure Manjaro community releases, so the only keyrings mentioned would be arch and manjaro keyrings. Once I realised this, I could adapt the keyring commands from Manjaro, with the added mabox-specific references:

sudo pacman -Sy gnupg archlinux-keyring manjaro-keyring mabox-keyring

and

sudo pacman-key --populate archlinux manjaro mabox

#59

Ah, didn’t know that. Thanks! :+1:

#60
