It is very annoying not being able to (un)lock widgets without using a script each time.

When you right click on Desktop and go to Edit Mode aka Alt+A,D then the widgets are unlocked. When you Close the Edit Mode then the widgets are locked. The KDE Plasma developers took that decision quite some time ago, to change the behavior. The command in that redit brings back the legacy behavior.
