Linux-meta and linux-nvidia-meta packages

Hi, I’m trying to uninstall an old kernel with sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux612 but I get

:: removing linux612 breaks dependency 'linux612' required by linux-meta
:: removing linux612-nvidia breaks dependency 'linux612-nvidia' required by linux-nvidia-meta

It seems like I can freely uninstall both of those, and they do not have any files listed, so it seems likely they are an artifact from an earlier manjaro version.

However, seeing as very nearly 100% of the computer problems I have are caused by nvidia, and nvidia is explicitly mentioned here, I was hoping someone could confirm that my understanding is correct and that it’s safe to delete these.

Just so you know … linux612 is an LTS (long term support), and will be around for about 2 years at least.
It is also the latest LTS so whatever you are replacing it with will be something only supported for some weeks or months (assuming you are going ‘up’).

But, as to your query, of course you will need to remove linux-meta and linux-nvidia-meta before proceeding. And no, this wont hurt anything else.

By the way these meta packages are usually inherited because the system was left running an EOL (end of life) kernel.

Ah, yes that all makes sense. I normally stay on the latest kernel in full release, but once or twice I might have forgotten to update it until it was technically EOL.

However, I wasn’t really paying attention so I did not know that 6.12 was in fact latest LTS until you told me, so I might as well keep it as a backup.

Thanks!

I forgot to link the thing so heres that too - this site has extra info about kernels, their status, and definitions of terms etc.

Though of course be aware this information pertains to upstream kernel development so, for example, the current versions will not necessarily reflect those in the Manjaro repositories.
