Before I thought to try startx i thought this could be graphic driver issue from a previous experience. I uninstalled optimus-switch (noting optimus-manager was issue for some in this update, however unrelated it may be). Tried free/nonfree drivers with no change.
I also noted a post to rollback systemd which also had no effect.
I don’t think its related to python update, no packages come up when i run the suggested command.

Thank you for your assistance.

which driver did you use ? nvidia or nouveau ?
and please send Xorg.log

edit: Before the update i had optimus-switch installed, and set to intel mode, with the same drivers as above. I uninstalled it incase of issue.

The error log indicates that it’s because of plymouth. If you removed it, you should check if it’s still enabled somewhere because it tries to run it.

Near in this thread : https://forum.manjaro.org/t/x-wouldn-t-start-properly-after-upgrade/97217/14

The kernel module is not loaded
sudo modprobe nvidia

and try :
sudo systemctl disable plymouth.service

This i do have everyday in my ligthdm.log. And it runs without problem. This is a false positive

The real problem lies here:

Thank you, i had a look at plymouth on arch wiki, couldn’t find any of the related systemd services or config files, no mention of plymouth in lightdm config.

i’ll look at the nvidia config.

  1. start your desktop with startx
  2. look what module is used in /var/log/Xorg.log
  3. look what module is loaded with lsmod
  4. Then if you know for sure, include this module (nvidia or nouveau) in your initramdisk (mkinitcpio.conf)
  • MODULES=(btrfs nouveau) ?

here is mine to compare:

cat /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
# vim:set ft=sh
# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
# MODULES=(piix ide_disk reiserfs)
#akf
# nouveau hier einzutragen aktiviert kms frühzeitig.
MODULES=(btrfs nouveau)
#MODULES=(btrfs)

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=()

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=()

# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
# HOOKS=(base)
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS=(base udev autodetect block filesystems)
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
## No autodetection is done.
# HOOKS=(base udev block filesystems)
#
## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
# HOOKS=(base udev block mdadm encrypt filesystems)
#
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
# HOOKS=(base udev block lvm2 filesystems)
#
## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
# usr, fsck and shutdown hooks.
#
#akf
HOOKS=(base udev systemd autodetect modconf block keyboard sd-vconsole filesystems bootsplash-manjaro)
#HOOKS=(base systemd autodetect modconf block keyboard sd-vconsole filesystems bootsplash-manjaro)

xorg log reports nvidia is loaded ok, while failing nouveau and others as posted above.

lsmod|grep nvidia

nvidia_uvm 1179648 0
nvidia_drm 73728 2
nvidia_modeset 1155072 3 nvidia_drm

nvidia 36954112 90 nvidia_uvm,nvidia_modeset
drm 569344 14 drm_kms_helper,nvidia,nvidia_drm,i915

lsmod|grep nouveau is blank

my etc/mkinitcpio.conf
MODULES=()

adding nvidia to the above has no effect.

when unistalling optimus-switch it does state xorg won’t work until another optimus setup is used.
perhaps i naively assumed simply reinstalling the hybrid nvidia driver alone would be enough.
i might try bumblebee, though it won’t explain why it went wrong in the first place.

I’ve gone through optimus-switch setup again. I can still progress with startx.
No change to lightdm issue, however it appears to switch correctly between intel(modesetting) and nvidia drivers from xorg, lsmod output.

Can i disbale lightdm with systemd or otherwise to prevent locking up while i’m away from the machine?

thanks for all the help so far, i am grateful.

Is nouveau installed, even you don´t use it `?

nouveau is not installed(intentionally), not sure why xorg tries to load in nvidia mode yet. my mhwd list is shown above.

I feel that optimus switch is working correctly, the system starts with desired intel/nvidia mode on demand. Might not be graphical related issue.

Here is the xorg log from intel(modesetting driver) mode. (nvidia is completly disabled as intended per optimus switch)

I had noted the homed error, rolling back systemd didn’t resolve it, might try again to reassure myself.

thanks again.

It seems lightdm has not crashed, desktop loads after 2 minutes. I will flag this thread as it maybe better served in different location with modified title-delayed login

Once loaded it works fine; suspends resumes, multimedia keys(brightness, backlight etc), this is not the case if i stop lightdm and use startx/startxfce4 from tty.

If i logout, stop and start lightdm from tty later in my session it still hangs.

I’ve installed rng-tools, (i had haveged for a while, didn’t know it was outdated until troubleshooting this issue):

in tty before login attempt following boot;

cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail
4032

journalctl (-r reverse log)
