Libreoffice causing CPU issues even when turned off

hello dear bogdancovaciu

many many thanks for the continued support you offer . thats just great.

ahh- now on re-read i see: and here are the results…

in@martin-pc ~]$ pacman -Qi libreoffice
Fehler: Paket 'libreoffice' wurde nicht gefunden
[martin@martin-pc ~]$

which means - the paket libreoffoice was not being found…
look forward to hear from you again

greetings

First remove any trace of configs you previously had:
rm -r ~/.config/libreoffice
then install:
sudo pacman -S libreoffice-fresh
or do it from octopi/pamac and select the optional dependencies you see i have installed too in my output.
Then look inside /etc/profile.d/libreoffice-fresh.sh and uncomment or add this line:
export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3_kde5
If is there by default, uncommented, then let it be.
If your machine is capable of OpenCL and you have the package suited for your GPU installed, enable it in libreoffice settings.
It should work flawlessly

hello dear bodancovaciu

many many thanks for the quick reply.

the mentioned file - at etc/profile.d/libreoffice-fresh.sh looks like so:

# to force a certain look'n feel

#export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen
#export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3_kde5
#export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk
#export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3

so i leave it as is

in other words - i do nothing here

If your machine is capable of OpenCL and you have the package suited for your GPU installed, enable it in libreoffice settings.
It should work flawlessly

hmm - no i do not have OpenCL - and i have no corresponding packages installed…

NO … uncomment the line … remove the # sign so is only
export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3_kde5
What GPU do you have and what drivers?
inxi -G

hello many thanks

okay i uncommendet it

see the output:

[martin@martin-pc ~]$ inxi -G
Graphics: Device-1: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics driver: i915 v: kernel
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.1 driver: intel unloaded: modesetting resolution: 1366x768~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Sandybridge Mobile v: 3.3 Mesa 18.2.2
[martin@martin-pc ~]$

look forward to hear from you
greetings

Ok, forget about OpenCL

That should do it. Restart Libreoffice and see if it still does nasty things …

hello dear bogdancovaciu

many thanks for the continued help . now all looks very nice.

great that it works now.

you made my day!

many many thanks - greetings

No offense, but this stuff has all been covered on the forum numerous times recently. I’m glad you got it working, but you need to polish up on your search procedure.

hello tbg,
many thanks for the hint - and for your answer all above.

yesterday i was totally upset since the temp - measured with sensors -
was increasing steadily… so i frightend - to loose the cpu…

  • we have had 80 to 81 degree celsius - and the critical temp is at 88 degree.

above all - youre right i have to polish up on my search procedure.

have a good day
greetings

I think–don’t know for sure–that your 2nd Gen. Intel rig may want the xf86-video-intel driver package to be installed to function properly.

sudo pacman -S xf86-video-intel

Reboot, run whatever normally heats up your machine, then report back. It can’t do any harm to try, that is for sure.

regards

Same here.

I have libreoffice-fresh installed, but i’m not on kde, i’m on xfce

Sometimes libreoffice becomes so very sluggish, (i.e. typing a letter and waiting for it to appear)

My understanding is that gvfs creates the problem on kde, but what about xfce?

Maybe because i have parts of kde installed (using kdenlive and all)?

$ pacman -Qs gvfs
zsh: correct 'gvfs' to '.gvfs' [nyae]? n
local/gvfs 1.38.1-1 (gnome)
    Virtual filesystem implementation for GIO
local/gvfs-afc 1.38.1-1 (gnome)
Virtual filesystem implementation for GIO (AFC backend; Apple mobile devices)
local/gvfs-goa 1.38.1-1 (gnome)
Virtual filesystem implementation for GIO (Gnome Online Accounts backend; cloud storage)
local/gvfs-google 1.38.1-1 (gnome)
Virtual filesystem implementation for GIO (Google Drive backend)
local/gvfs-gphoto2 1.38.1-1 (gnome)
Virtual filesystem implementation for GIO (gphoto2 backend; PTP camera, MTP media player)
local/gvfs-mtp 1.38.1-1 (gnome)
Virtual filesystem implementation for GIO (MTP backend; Android, media player)
local/gvfs-nfs 1.38.1-1 (gnome)
Virtual filesystem implementation for GIO (NFS backend)
local/gvfs-smb 1.38.1-1 (gnome)
Virtual filesystem implementation for GIO (SMB/CIFS backend; Windows client)

I have gvfs and using KDE Plasma, no issues. It shouldn’t create any issues in XFCE either.
For libreoffice whatever is using the: export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3 or not, there shouldn’t be a lag while typing. Is the entropy ok on your system? (just guessing here), but feezes might have something to do with it either splash startup/login or maybe other programs too, so:

Thank you very much for the suggestion
I will look into it

I have installed haveged, this is its status after a reboot

Also here are some of the things discussed on that thread

Do any of these make ant sence?

BTW, I have managed to get libreoffice use gtk (not gtk3), which solved some of my problems with it  Thanks for that!
