Unresponsive GUI and mouse/keyboard input

Hi,

When browsing the application launcher the gui lags behind by a second or so, if I drag a file or icon around it lags behind the pointer by sometimes several seconds and even when typing I can get a few words ahead of them appearing on screen. If I detach a tab from chrome the whole tab will be stuck for several(10 or so) seconds, slowly moving to wherever I dragged it and often just going back to where it originally was.

Issue seems to get worse during load.

Any ideas on how I can get the system feel snappier?

Welcome to the forum!

From what that sounds like, you appear to have a stuck process. Check your CPU load and process list with htop for anything that might be hogging the CPUs.

Thanks! Iā€™m really new to manjaro and linux in general so apologies if I misunderstand or am slow to catch on.

I canā€™t spot anything in htop that stands out as hogging resources, they all shift around and the top ones are typically xorg, chrome and kwin_x11. Never saw any bar hit 20% or above.

  • Kernel 5.12 is EOL so please install both 5.4 and 5.10 LTS (Long Time Support) and see which one of the two troubles you least.
  • You probably upgraded your RAM recently and forgot to adapt the swap file, so please read this too although itā€™s unrelated to your problem.
  • Your UEFI firmware looks really old. Check your manufacturerā€™s website for a ā€œBIOS updateā€ or a ā€œFirmware updateā€.

Please read this too:

Iā€™ve spent a bit playing around with different kernels, but noticed no noticable change in the problems Iā€™ve been having.

I read the wiki, and I think it recommends reducing the ram to 6gb, but if I understand it correctly thereā€™s not any disadvantage to having extra?

Iā€™ve updated UEFI to the latest version.

Appreciate the help!

So does that mean everything works now?

No, it recommends to have a SWAP file of:

  • ROUND(SQRT(RAM)) = ROUND(SQRT(32)) = 6 GByte if you do not use hibernation
  • RAM+ROUND(SQRT(RAM)) = 38 GByte if you do use hibernation

I just wanted to warn you that I thought the 8.8 GB value was a weird one, thatā€™s all! Donā€™t do anything if you donā€™t use hibernation! 8.8 GB is fine as well!

:+1:

Sorry for the confusion, no, thereā€™s no noticable change - the problem is still the same.

I honestly have no idea why it is 8.8GB, but dont use hibernation so Iā€™ll let it be.

I have about the same specs as you (except just 16GB of RAM, but same GPU, no NVMe but M2 SATA SSDs for boot and HDD for data) and your system should be screamingly fast!

Please reboot and provide the output to:

journalctl --system --boot=0 --priority=3 | tail --lines=75
smartctl --all /dev/nvme0n1
smartctl --all /dev/sda
smartctl --all /dev/sdb
smartctl --all /dev/sdc

(in that order as the first command must be executed as fast as possible after login)

Mind you, currently have windows installed on the NVMe, while manjaro resides on a sata ssd. Iā€™ve not had issues of the same sort in Windows, which makes me question hardware issues and assume itā€™s instead my poor configuration skills.

Oh, and the kernel is back at 5.13 just because it defaulted there when rebooting, the former tests was with manually choosing in grub. The problem is evident when typing this forum post out, as I can easily get a word or two ahead of the text appearing after typing.

journalctl --system --boot=0 --priority=3 | tail --lines=75

  1. Please stay on 5.10 as a default while weā€™re looking what is wrong (change GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true)
  2. Can you unplug the wireless headset dongle and reboot and see if that helps?
  3. Can you do the same with the NVMe? (keeping the wireless headset dongle out too)

  1. Done
  2. Done, the error-messages regarding the usb-stuff is gone, but problem persists.

  1. This will take me a bit as itā€™s a bit hard to reach inside the case. Would disabling it in bios be enough or ir physically removing it a better idea?

Good enoughā€¦

And if that doesnā€™t solve the problem, output to:

ps aux --sort=-pcpu | head --lines=10

Please?

As it turns out, thereā€™s no way of disabling it in bios. Iā€™ll try removing it, but itā€™ll have to wait a week or so. (Need access to the windows install on it and thereā€™s a radiator blocking access to it so it takes a while to get it out and in again)

Apologies if it feels like Iā€™m wasting your time.

Not sure if thereā€™s any point to posting this before Iā€™ve removed the drive, but just in case:

Firefox is taking up 1 core of your entire system:

  • What happens of you quit Firefox? Does the problem persist?
  • Whatyā€™s the output of nvidia-smi?

:open_mouth:

Firefox had nothing but a tab for this forum open, to confirm the exact line you suggested and post the reply, so it shouldnt be very demanding but hereā€™s the outputs:
