Noticed that opening Libreoffice and OBS Flatpaks through Xwayland fails to open. Says something about failed to open display.

OBS says this.

I don’t have much experience with flatpaks, but it’s possible you might be able to fix this by setting the $DISPLAY (as opposed to $WAYLAND_DISPLAY) variable somewhere in there. I’ve certainly found this is needed when using XWayland with the several programs I use that don’t play well with Wayland.

Not sure i understand any of this Linux jargon. I tried to set $DISPLAY env variable to the app, but nothing happened really.

First:

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

Then compare with what the Flatpak sees:

If the variables disappear inside the Flatpak sandbox environment, that’s a strong clue.

I don’t want to appear nasty, but if you don’t understand “Linux jargon”, Manjaro probably isn’t the distro for you. You’d probably be better off with a distro that’s aimed more at beginners; Manjaro is more for experienced Linux users.

That’s what it shows when Libreoffice is ran with Wayland toggled off in Flatseal.
I think that the latest XWayland probably has some bugs for it to not work properly. After the latest update it stopped working nicely and Xwayland got updated.

Or i guess it could be anything really. Azahar and Dolphin emu both works with Xwayland which those are set to be working with. Also Steam and Heroic works so maybe it’s something about Libreoffice and OBS.

Since both WAYLAND_DISPLAY and DISPLAY are empty inside the Flatpak, I don’t think this points to an XWayland regression yet. The sandbox currently has no display server variables to connect to, which matches the Qt errors.

If the variables are present on the host but empty inside the sandbox, as a temporary test you could try forwarding them:

If that makes the app start, it would point to a Flatpak/portal/environment propagation issue rather than a LibreOffice or OBS problem.

Tried it. Didn’t still open. I think i can live with just using Wayland on these programs for now although Libreoffice blurry text is kinda eyesore.

How about installing it from the repos instead of a flatpak?

Silly question.
Why are you running LibreOffice from a flatpak?

LibreOffice-Fresh, installed from the repos, works perfectly on my machine.

OBS is also available from the Repos, so I could also ask that silly question. Why?

On Cinnamon, I am running libre-office-full-appimage 26.2.4.2 and it works perfectly fine, dark theme and all, on Xlibre and Wayland. This is definitely a Flatpak issue

Im running it as a Flatpak cause it was easier switching to Xwayland with it. If i do it through the KDE Menu Editor for the repo app ill have to do the environment variable for all the different Libreoffice apps. Also if i use the Menu Editor to put the env variable in i will have to delete the .desktop files if i happen to delete it so that the menu entries go away.

This doesn’t help with your current FlatPaks issue but I used LibreOffice for over a decade & recently replaced it with OnlyOffice - I’ve never looked back. It’s also available via FlatPak. I hope you find a fix soon. R

OnlyOffice for me has an ugly theme so i never used it.

Switching to XWayland? Then you are running with Wayland as your Compositor. You don’t need to switch to anything. You just install the packages.

If i don’t use Xwayland with Libreoffice, it has blurry text when doing fractional scaling. That’s why i need to use Xwayland with it.

So you are using Wayland. XWaland is provided so that any application that is specifically written for X will still run on a Wayland Compositor.

Since you are using KDE Plasma with kwin_wayland as your compositor. There is no reason not to use the packages in the Repo.

Just install those, and you do not need to do anything else.

Your actual problem appears to be you are overthinking it.

Id rather just not install the Libreoffice repo package cause the menu editor env variable trick to run Libreoffice in Xwayland makes me have to remove .desktop files manually if i happen to uninstall it for the menu entries to be removed. I guess ill just live with the blurry Libreoffice for now.

Maybe someone fixes the Flatpak issue some day.

Also Libreoffice isn’t running with X by default so no in Wayland it will not automatically run in XWayland.

Also Flatpak of OBS is basically the official way of doing OBS on Linux. The OBS thing does not matter me, but thought that id point it out anyway cause it wasn’t also working normally.

You are not making sense. LibreOffice is written for Wayland. It is not an X11 application.

You do not need to do anything. You do not need to set an environment Variable.
I am running LibreOffice -Fresh on KDE Plasma with Wayland. There are no issues, and I never had to set an environment variable.

It just works.
