Lenovo splash screen during boot is gone

I have a Lenovo Ideapad 3 laptop with Manjaro Linux with KDE.

It used to have a splash screen during boot (and I’m pretty sure also during shutdown; always hated the fact that they were indistinguishable but that’s OT) with the Lenovo logo.

I hadn’t been using this computer for several months, so now I installed a lot of pending updates.

After that, the Lenovo splash screen is gone.

“Who” could have deleted it and is there a way to get it back?

Why would you care?

… about seeing it
if the machine is working as it should.

Try booting the iso you installed from.
Or any other.
You’d probably have to go through Bios / Firmware settings to do it,
and will see that splash screen somewhere along the way.
Or not.

It’s nice to see something on the screen as soon as possible to be reassured that the system is actually booting, especially nowadays when the hard drive makes no noise at all, the fan is often very silent, and the difference between a screen that doesn’t turn on and one that is turned on but is black is pretty subtle.
If I remember correctly, below the vendor’s logo, it had also some spinning icon or moving dots added by Manjaro (not surfe if even a small Manjaro logo).

Besides, I already had it so I’m quite pissed that it’s gone for no reason. I was never asked if I wanted to remove it.

Yes, booting from some random usb stick does indeed show the splash screen, but that doesn’t accomplish much.

Maybe I wasn’t clear enough. It’s not that I want to see the splash screen once or a few times because it’s aesthetically pleasing. I want it to show up every time I boot normally into the system that I’m going to use, which is the one installed on my hard drive.

I remove/disable plymouth so a bit unsure …

But plymouth is a boot-splash thing that is supposed to show some graphics while the kernel and such is loading. Could it be that this is in place and nullifying the firmware image? Maybe this results in something like -nothing- showing if plymouth is enabled but not correctly configured?

For my part - with plymouth disabled and a ‘silent boot’ … I only see the manufacturer image and nothing else until SDDM login is displayed.

So:
the Lenovo splash is still there - not deleted
Those worries are gone now.

Why it is not showing when you boot is something I do not know (nor care) how to investigate.

Someone else might know.

Oh ok, I didn’t get it, your suggestion was meant to check for that.

I assumed it had (almost certainly) not been physically deleted; when I said “deleted” I meant “removed” as in “configured to not show up anymore”.

Thank you!

So, turns out plymouth was not installed, and by “was” I mean after all the updates, when I started observing the “issue”.

I have now installed plymouth, plymouth-theme-manjaro and plymouth-kcm (because I noticed these are all installed on my newer laptop and were missing on the affected one), and now the splash screen is back, exactly as it used to be. It has the Lenovo logo (which I guess is stored somewhere in the firmware and Plymouth “uses” it) and an animated “…” below.

I guess somehow the updates caused Plymouth to get uninstalled, I don’t know why. I did remove some packages myself because they caused conflicts and errors and were preventing me from completing the updates, but I’m pretty sure Plymouth wasn’t one of them.

The vendor logo is set in the BIOS and has nothing to do with plymouth.
My Lenovo Thinkpad T series shows the red Lenovo logo even though plymouth is not installed.
Some months ago after updates to SDDM etc. (on unstable) the Lenovo logo was gone, but as soon fwupd installed new Bios firmware the logo came back.
Apparently installing plymouth has the same effect.

But I’m pretty sure the three animated “…” dots below it are not part of the vendor logo. EDIT: they are obviously not, there’s also a Manjaro logo at the bottom.

Aren’t they painted by Plymouth “on top” of the logo that’s in the BIOS?

I also have these three dots besided the Manjaro logo. But I should say “I had” because…
… since last grub update 2:2.12.r212 the vendor and Manjaro logo splash screen is gone again.

This sounds like a different issue that is currently only available to Unstable branch.
